Mitchell's A-Z of Fetish Artists - Olaf

Olaf was a prominent illustrator for magazines like Drummer in the 80's and his work is much admired for it's technical skill and detail, typified by the Inquisitive Cop picture below.

There's an element of tribute to Tom of Finland here, in the cop's face for example. The amazing detail in the tweaking hand suggests a photographic reference which is legitimate in my view as long as there is 'added value' by the artist.

Many of his pictures hint at fetish subjects without depicting anything very specific, no doubt a consequence of commercial constraints. The enema example here is an exception and it makes a dramatic statement. Technically there's quite a contrast between this picture and the previous example with somewhat muddy detail in the mid-section. It almost looks as though two different poses have been 'married' together. I must say, however, that the treatment of the bound hands is excellent.

Olaf - Devils 3

The final example is completely different, one of a series in which two devils ravish a man in a churchyard. To me this is a glimpse of the real Olaf, full of spontenaity and excitement, and unashamedly glorying in lust and eroticism. The blobby shaped background is a bit odd but in this picture technical correctness simply doesn't matter, it expresses it's subject with great panache and life, qualities which are rather less apparent in his 'better' art.

Mitchell's A-Z of Fetish Artists - Okawa

I cannot talk about Okawa's art without observing that it is unmistakeably Japanese. The delicacy of style and colouring has some kinship to modern day Kimura, but unlike that artist there is absolutely no westernisation of the faces, or the clothing (Okawa often uses traditional loincloths and headbands) or the settings, which feature pine trees and even cherry blossom!

From a fetish point of view the most interesting manifestation of these influences are the pictures where the captive is left outside exposed to the elements - rain, snow, the sea etc. I can't think of any other artist who has explored this theme so interestingly. Of course depicting water in it's various forms presents technical challenges but Okawa acquits himself well. 

Okawa 04 Shipbound

There is one exception to the 'Westernisation' discussion , at one point in his career Okawa seems to have been influenced by Tom of Finland whose bikers in leather jackets (above) and tight jeans with turn-ups start to appear in the supporting cast. Okawa captives are transplanted into Tom-like settings and even the drawing style echoes Tom. I'm cautious about the authenticity of these drawings but it's an interesting group.

Okawa 51L Treetied

Generally speaking Okawa's captives are not naked, in accordance with the mores of the time, but he usually skillfully fills the boy's loincloths with erotic bulges, sometimes accentuated and enhanced by carefully placed bindings (see other pictures in this article). 

The example of frontal nudity above is almost unique in my collection (a few other images I have appear to have been censored) and the stretched, beautifully depicted genitals show what we have missed out on. The suspended victim and his beating with a stave are typical Okawa themes and leave us wondering if this is austere family discipline, military - or something more sinister. Okawa doesn't shrink from violence and some pictures show the bloody aftermath, but it's not gory.

Many of his young men (as here) are characterised with soft, slightly fleshy, almost feminine faces and while this is absolutely authentic, for me personally it is less erotically appealing than, say, Hasegawa's leaner look or Tagame's brutal looking protagonists, which stand at the other end of the facial spectrum. In this picture the cropped hair helps and I must admit, that I do like fleshiness in the body styling. I shouldn't leave this picture without pointing out the graceful leg lines and well-drawn feet.

The same characteristics can be seen in the 'crucifixion' image. In this picture the skillful use of lighting and perspective stand out, but don't miss the complex rope patterns and securing nuts which are clearly and convincingly captured. I love the hairy legs too. The triangular wedge between the victims legs is perhaps an over-enthusiastic elaboration. It produces a nice division of the testicles but I suspect the victim is too well supported to feel it's full divisive effect.

Okawa 31L - Tied and Beaten

At the end of the day Okawa is a bondage artist and the final image exemplifies this. Even today, in an era awash with male bondage imagery, it is simply stunning in it's quality, beauty and impact. The rope tethering the victim to a nearby tree or post greatly increases the psychological effect.

Okawa is one of the great fetish artists.

Mitchell's A-Z of Fetish Artists - Oda

Oda Toshimi is one of those artists known for a particular striking image, or in his case a set of images, depicting the punishment of a captured Japanese soldier during the Sino-Japanese war. The captive is subjected to a variety of tortures while onlookers jeer and laugh.

I picked this example, partly for the unusual cigarette torture, but also because of the depiction of captive transportation. There is something highly erotic about a tied man being carried off from the scene of his capture to another place where he can expect to be abused. The usual technique is for the hunky captor to sling his acquisition over his shoulder, caveman style. This method, suspended from a pole carried between two men, is favoured for a heavy or struggling victim and is much beloved of Tarzan scenarios, but otherwise quite unusual. It suggests the victim is prized and/or dangerous, (if not necessarily destined for the stewpot!)

The style of the pictures with their soft colours and flattened perspective is distinctive, but I can't see any clear cut link to traditional Oriental art. The characterful faces and explicitly detailed tortures make the images memorable. They are often put forward as example of classic, post war (WW2) Japanese erotic art. However, there are some interesting features.

The naked captive is muscular and handsome, but leaving aside the generous erection which he maintains thoughout his ordeal, the youthful, innocent way he is depicted makes him seem almost like a martyr in the context of the drawing. His tormentors include women and all their faces are caricatured in a Hogarthian way to show their hatred of the captive and amusement over his fate. However, they are all fully dressed in heavy clothes and there is not the slightest hint of sexuality in the way they are depicted, despite being engaged in genital tortures. Their interest in the victim is limited to jeering his erection and punishing it.

It almost lends a flavour of historical realism to the picture with a political jab at the barbarian Chinese thrown in for good measure. Perhaps it's only a sophisticated form of masochism where the victim is not even desired by his torturers. It has to be judged by the standards of it's era, which I am not qualified to do. Certainly the representation doesn't stand in the way of enjoyment for fetish enthusiasts.

Mitchell's A-Z of Fetish Artists - Letter 'O'

The letter 'O' gives us a small but select band of fetish artists to make up for the break since 'N' including Okawa, Osamu and Osze. I will launch the new letter with a picture by Owsley a study of two sailors kissing which isn't really fetishistic at all (unless you count naval uniforms!) but is a really attractive and erotic image. I believe the title is 'The Lottery'.

It is ostensibly a straight-forward romantic picture that could easily be created in photographic format*, but if you study the detailing, it lifts it into a different realm and is a great example of the special capabilities of hand drawn art. 
(*since writing this I have found that it is from a photograph! I will update this article in due course)

Dennis Owsley - The Lottery

The picture has two focal points, the kissing heads and the hand grasping the bulge, cleverly making it romantic and erotic at the same time. These areas are portrayed in ways to match these moods. Thus the sailor's eyelashes are almost feminine, the neck and jaw lines of his friend are simple sensuous sweeps crossed by the dotted curves of his dog-tag chains (which by themselves succeed in giving 3D shape and depth). The groping hand, in contrast, is uncompromisingly detailed, chunky and masculine with fingers spread wide suggesting improbable, but very sexy bulk between his buddy's legs. The outlines of the buttocks and detailing of the buttoned flap contribute greatly to the sexiness of this area suggesting other destinations for the hand to explore.

There is more technical interest in the soft, pointillist detailing of the torso (causing it to recede) compared with the sharp almost plastic flicks of the creases radiating from the knees in the foreground. I find the open trouser leg with a hint of hemlines and glimpse of sock disappearing into the darkness completely fascinating.

Chase Hostler tied up in swimming trunks - 1 (angry)

 

I am a bit of a fan of Chase Hostler, he is lucky enough to have a face that looks both cute and masculine and also posseses a chunky body that has developed, with training, into sensuous plumped up (dare I say voluptuous?) curves without looking musclebound. He obviously works hard at it, but others less gifted by nature might labour endlessly at the gym and never achieve this look.

 Chase's self confessed narcism (see his blog) is rather less appealing (if true), so I like these swim bondage images by Aaron Corbett, which appear to be putting the young man firmly in his place (as per the mitchmen motto!). The jazzy swimming trunks and sun visor certainly suggest a flashy, style-conscious persona in need of a dose of reining in and realism!

Swimming trunks and bondage always go well together anyway (click the speedo bondage lable at the foot of this post for more examples). For me there's a sense of vulnerability and reality that isn't there with underwear bondage.

The rope used on Chase is thick and strong-looking and applying it to his upper body nicely highlights it's bulk and curvature. This halter style rope harness is body enhancing but can also be used to anchor the hands higher up behind the the back, making it harder for the captive to wriggle them free. The lower body arrangement is more decorative! Chase presents it provocatively, challenging his captor.

Royale Studios - Soaking a Sailor I did a survey of the Royale Studios output last year, but I have never seen this set before. A sailor is abducted by his comrades and subjected to various punishments. This rarity has been uncovered by Sailor Al at SailorUniforms Blog and you can see much of the set posted there. Have a look! Apparently Royale often wetted the model's trousers to get a clingy fit. The T-shirts showcase some muscular arms too. This set features lots of bondage but the real interest is the Sailors themselves. I have now fully implemented the GIU/Royale label linking to all my articles about Royale and Guys in Uniform Studios.

Warrior overpowered - 4

Jay Diers - Spartans

Continuing with the warriors theme, this picture is part of a group by Jay Diers, also reviewed at Beautiful Mag (Link = Spartans). Despite the grimace, there's not a lot of tension in the pose but it's nice to see the 'male overpowering male' scenario acted out with an erotic flavour. The odd looking helmet is quite sinister but the Spartan association ain't what it used to be since Hollywood took an interest.

Continuing with the theme of fantasy warriors in bondage,
I found these men at Simon Barnes' photography site Hopsnapz

Roger Snipes by Simon Barnes
Roger Snipes' appearance has many qualities appropriate to a fantasy warrior including a muscular body and stern facial expression. This pose also suggests nobility and humility.

Thankfully, (from my point of view) there are no long flowing tresses of hair and Simon has not given him furry underwear (I'll overlook the leggings!) I must say, if the weather is good enough to run around half naked (and bare foot!) on the battlefield I can't see why a warrior would need to wear fluffy animal skins evolved for colder climates!

Harry by Simon Barnes

'Harry' somehow cuts a more modern look thanks mainly to his tidy short hair. This style is quite popular in Hollywood films for well connected Romans and their Generals. Did barbarians have hair cuts too? Probably, but perhaps not as precisely coiffeured as this!
For authenticity I'll settle for the muscles, sweat and blood.

Harry's a bit young for the warrior role depicted in my previous post but I can imagine him following Roger into battle to meet their fates.

Simon's photography is worth looking at, it has a bit of unexpected edge sometimes.

Warrior in Bondage

This picture turned up in my posts recently and is one of my current favourites.
I love the concept of the warrior tamed. The bizarre, forked restraining device has an erotic impact which I can't explain. (or is it an exotic sword turned against it's owner?)

This looks like an image from fantasy fiction which isn't my normal fare but I like this.

The humiliation factor in this image is nicely judged, not over the top but very real. The nudity is understated but still obvious. The hands crossed in front rather than behind suggest forced submission as opposed to the need for restraint of the angry captive. They also give a sense of embarassed modesty. The mature, muscular body (although it's somewhat at variance with the glimpse of youthful jaw) suggests to us that he is a captive of some substance, an experienced, dangerous warrior bought to heel. A worthy conquest.

Sorry I've no information on the artist.

Vest Buddies

I've been doing some 'vest' items on my main blog to keep things going along while home commitments continue to monopolise my attention. I stumbled across this one while doing a picture tidying exercise. I do find tight vests on a well muscled chest powerfully erotic and the combination here with jeans and large belt buckles here only serves to add to the sexy mix!
I don't find either of these men particularly attractive but as a pair they project a powerful sense of shared male-ness.

Ross Watson

Ross Watson - Untitled

Ross Watson's series of pictures combining old masters and photographs of young men is a technically interesting for the skill with which he blends colours, textures and the models poses into a seamless composition. The choice of Francoise Sagat to play the crucifixion victim (above) is apt given that model's fascination with the bizarre. Transplanting a person you feel you know into a representation of a historical drama which you also recognise gives this image a frisson of unreality and fetishistic danger which is entirely appropriate for this blog.

Ross Watson - UntitledThis example is less successful because the adaptation doesn't go with the flow of the original picture. The man emerging from the sea has a delightful slender torso (which is why I selected it) but he isn't connecting with the other characters and I can't work out why he's wading along with his arms over his head like that, unless he's sleep walking.

Most of the images in this series end up looking surrealist rather than staying true to the original but serve to illustrate that the gulf between that movement and the old masters is less than one might suppose. I have posted another example on my mitchmen2 blog

Rugby Heaven

I think I'm probably losing it but I think these pictures are the sexiest I've seen in a long time.
Normally I hate cut-off snippets in clothing ads but in this case it serves to accentuate this guys magnificent thighs. A fitting complement to rugby shorts.

The socks play a part too, again accentuating the chunky upper legs, but also drawing attention to the slender shapely calves below the knee.

This is a splendid fit as off the peg garments go, hugging the backside nicely and oh, the square cut leg does make those muscular thighs so alluring.

For some reason the maroon colour seems to add a bit extra too,
if you go to the website footyboys you'll see every colour imaginable and some more arty pictures too. But these images are quite enough to keep me warm!

Aquadude

Aquadude - Sun Torture

Aquadude is one of the unsung heroes of fetish art. He takes the classic 'hero in trouble' theme of films, comic books and pulp fiction and draws out the underlying homo-sado-eroticism. Aquadude's images, created by photo assembly and manipulation, insert muscular porn studs into scenes from classic film genres like westerns and historical dramas.

In his stories, the improbably handsome hero is captured and subjected to a succession of violent and humiliating tortures all graphically depicted in long sequences of dozens of images.

His inventiveness in devising new tortures, tingling with eroticism, puts coventional dungeon porn to shame. He also explores the lust which the torturer has for his victim, the power that the captive exerts, unwittingly and unwillingly, over his captor.

This picture is plate 36 from Aquadude's latest story "The Pony Express Rider" and is a typical striking image. It's not perfect technically (Aquadude's best work is astonishingly 'seamless') but it does demonstrate the montage technique which he uses and it's power to conjure up exciting sexy scenarios.

Guys In Uniform - 11 Military Intimidation

Two vintage military pictures from the now defunct 'Guys in Uniform' studio.

GIU managed to seek out models with exceptional thighs and cram them into skimpy shorts, with a result that is arguably more erotic than nudity. Their combination of ordinary clothing with more sexual dress created a sense of bizarre, unpredictable events going on. This 'through the legs' shot expresses both threat and domination, which was central to their work. The dangling strap here is a tingling bonus in the threat department. This pose also appeared regularly in Royale Studio's work, hence my confusion and error in GIU10, but this is definitely by Guys in Uniform, run by connected people supposedly.

 

The athlete's cross-legged pose is quite boyish and submissive but shows off his nicely adult pecs. He averts his eyes, a mixture of resignation and secret defiance. Touches like the real uniform and the hair on the soldier's legs give a sexy sense of naturalism absent from most modern studio work.

 

The second picture is slightly posed, but provides another great view of those powerful thighs. The strap is revealed to be an awesome instrument of pain, so no wonder the athlete looks sulky and resentful. The pugnacious face of the soldier is unmistakeably adult - no boy on boy action here. The athlete's hairstyle isn't military standard, which suggests a recruitment scenario, or an enlisted man who has let his standards slip during a period of absence. On leave, or perhaps AWOL. In reality, it's probably just the way he turned up on the day of the shoot!

Connor at Bound Guys - 4 (last)

This last image shows Connor, bound and on display at International Man of Leather convention as part of the Bound Guys stall. Connor for sale? What a thought!

The prospective buyers are checking out every detail while the captive seems to be evaluating his potential futures. Again no nudity to speak of, but so sexy.

Two pictures of Connor from a series called 'Property of...'
I get a bit twitchy about real life voluntary slavery but forced ownership as a fantasy is very erotic. Connor has a suitably concerned expression but the head resting on the bed cover spells out 'I submit'. The vest and line of the pinned-back arms is very sexy.

Readers will know I find clothing erotic and this struggling, 'vest-only' pose is excellent.

Puppy or not, Connor's resigned, hang-dog(!) body language is terrific.
Again the Tee-shirt emphasises the nudity of the lower body even though not much is visible.
It also frames his head nicely at this angle. Clever photography.

One of the highlights of the year for me was the arrival of a new model, Connor, at Bound Guys.
One of the nice features of this site is that it's not obsessed with nudity
(although that genre is well represented)
Connor's first appearance, clad in black singlet and jeans certainly did not disappoint.

Connor has an attractive boyish face and a chunky body
The storyline about a hotel thief surprised and tied up by his intended victim is sexy.

Connor's backside gets another showcase in a story of an American visitor
who is kidnapped and held hostage in a hotel room.

The victim's imploring look is terrific.

Nudity is superfluous when pants fit this well.

A-Z of Fetish Artists,The letter N - Mitchell's Choice

It is my custom to choose a favourite for each letter and the letter N has provided the usual mix of artistry and eroticism.

My criteria are artistic merit, fetish content and sensuality, all overlaid of course with my own personal prejudices. In this group we had two notable 'artistic' contributions from Naomichi and Nobeast - beautiful but possibly not fetishistic enough to top the heap. Nicolas's more elastic draughtsmanship is also worthy of mention for it's successful portrayal of struggle and movement. As for fetish, Neil Bruce covers a wide spectrum of tastes, disguised with humour, but Nath66's sci-fi/medic fantasies also strike a chord for me. In the extreme art department Nikos' struggling torture victims, though simply drawn, quicken the blood in contrast with the art of NSM, Nimium and Nikolaas, which is perhaps a bit too careful and passive.

None of the artists represented here majors in sensuality (in the erotic sense) but I guess Nath66 and Neil Bruce come closest and these two artists are my main contenders and despite my reservations about mixing humour with fetishism there is only one choice here for me .... Neil Bruce whose subtly disguised nastiness and power play is very erotic.

Mitchell's A-Z of Fetish Artists - Nunn

Nunn - Forced

I'm not a fan of the work of Paul Nunn and I don't collect it because of the youth of the subjects he draws. However, I'm happy to acknowledge his existence and show a sample which is less Yaoi-like than much of his work.

The captive buddies/comrades theme is another 'pinch' from standard adventure fiction and I find it very erotic although I've never figured out quite why it should exert this power. The sexual coupling pose shown here, even with bondage involved, is pretty standard fare these days over at sites like 'Bound Gods' but the substitution of normal clothing for leather gear immediately creates a more sinister real-life atmosphere. Nunn manages to infuse the scene with a sense of frenzied activity and aggression which makes the plight of the captives seem more real. The faces of the two aggressors and their victims spell out exactly what is happening. Cold shiver time!

Nunn takes a few liberties with perspective (like the table) but they don't jar and almost lend an air of Picasso-esque respectability. This image has more convincing 'depth' than most cartoons. It's interesting to compare his treatment of folds in clothes with NSM our last artist.

Mitchell's A-Z of Fetish Artists - NSM

I have a small selection of NSM's work which is another example of Science Fiction settings for S&M fetish. NSM's heroes are tied up and tortured by the inhabitants of other worlds.

NSM - Settling of Scores in The Mabin Desert

In 'Settling of scores in the Mabin desert' you might almost think you were in the Old West were it not for the curious spiky implement held by the torturer. The thorns embedded in the captive's thighs are an original variation on the piercing theme and suggest an undercurrent of pain. The dildo like post between the captives legs is, I suspect, a living organism that in due course will grow and impale (or engulf) the hapless captive.

I like the simple power of this image and the scope it gives for morbid fantasy. The captive's body with a flash of hair on the chest and arms is that of a real man. The depiction of the captor's clothing, though lacking any erotic interest, is none the less highly accomplished. The simple splashes of black which define the folds in the boots, for example, also create a startlingly effective 3D illusion. The stark black shadowing in this picture is a classic comic strip technique which is particularly useful in small scale comic drawings which have to be simple. In this full size picture it creates a powerful lighting effect but you can see it's a bit too powerful for defining musculature which has more subtle contours.

NSM - 'The Thing Plays With The Rebel'

In 'The Thing Plays With The Rebel', NSM unleashes a spiky creature of indeterminate shape on another realistic looking man. It's a clever idea but despite the facial grimace, the victim's muscle-man pose is just that, a photographic pose, and not the writhing of a man under attack. The branches(?) wrapped around his neck and draped over his head are brilliant but they should be pulling him, the ear probe should surely cause some reaction too. It's a bit of a disappointment that 'The Thing', armed with all those fearsome spikes, just wants to tickle him! But you have to admire the clarity with which the artist has managed to depict such a complex scene - unaided by the viewers own knowledge of what 'Things' look like. That's part of the problem of course, monsters exist in everyone's imagination but are defined not just as shapes, but as senses and intangible fears as well. Trying to convincing capture that complex entity on paper or celluloid is a challenge of the highest order.

NSM - The Nephew Will Take It

The final picture restores reality, this man actually looks like he is hanging by his arms. Another menacing (sort of!) organism rises to attack him. It's a nice drawing and captures a classic male fetish image in a very attractive way.

I like NSM's work, it's well drawn, imaginative and also memorable because it attempts to set male bondage in a context that is inherently filled with danger and the unknown. Paradoxically it also sums up the dilemma of the fetish artist:- now you've got him tied up, what are you going to do with him? If you really love men, it's a tough call!

Mitchell's A-Z of Fetish Artists - 'Nou'

Nou - Cage Thirst

This picture is something of a classic and regularly surfaces in art groups, I have it under the name Nou but I don't really know if that is the correct attribution, nor do I have any other work by him.

'The caged man' is a popular fetish theme but not that easy to make into a memorable visual image. The bars get in the way of course and there's a temptation to include additional bondage which, logically speaking, renders the cage superfluous. If you do away with the bondage, sizing the cage is an issue. Too large and the captive doesn't seem constrained enough, (think of Tom's prison cells which don't imprison so much as separate the prisoner and his jailor). Make the cage too small and the prisoner has to sit, a position which is altogether too comfortable, or else his head and legs fold into his body, hiding the most attractive features.

Nou's stroke of genius is to allow the prisoner's head to project from the top of the cage making it an anchoring device and allowing the crouching body position to be clearly seen. The detailing of the feet and legs is accomplished. The black mummy-like mask, hides the face and personality of the captive, but combines with the cage to make a powerful visual statement. I'm not sure many men would be able to replenish the urinal at that height - but then deception is part of the power of drawn art.

Mitchell's A-Z of Fetish Artists - NoBeast

NoBeast - Kiss

The fantasy worlds stalked by 'NoBeast' are outside my normal area of interest (too much long hair for a start!) but I have certain fascination with his amorous human-plus-monster encounters, which arguably are a very ancient fetish. In 'Kiss' NoBeast has accurately pinpointed the sensual eroticism underlying this potentially shocking fantasy subject. No peck on the cheek is this, check out where the dragon's teeth are!

There's an artistic intelligence about his rendering which is a delight to the eye. While the presentation is very modern his underlying technique harks back to the style of Aubery Beardsley, evidenced in the striking, artful poses, the simplicity of line and (below) the use of dense background patterns.

NoBeast - Tentacles

The tentacle art shown here is less stylish but to my mind is something of a classic in the genre, since it imports the fantasy dream into the real world rather than placing the dreamer in a fantasy land. This inversion of the usual approach creates a stronger sense of intimacy initially, but then one wonders about those strange hands!. The line of the arched body is very pleasing and draws attention to the untouched erection which allows the viewer a frisson of 'me too' anticipation, particularly if this gentleman is in the process of becoming prey.
