'Royale Studio Revisited' by DaveAlan01

Royal Marine Stevens - by DaveAlan01

This video is a sample of the AI Art produced by DaveAlan01. He's trying to visualise how Royale Studio images might have looked if they were produced now. This example has the right ingredients - British military uniforms contrasted with underwear in a disciplinary situation. I think Basil Clavering would have enjoyed the double underwear joke in this videoette. In his day it would have ridiculed the restrictions on depicting nudity rather incisively. In the modern context, it makes fun of our obsession with it.

Subscribers to the blog feed can view this video by visiting mitchmen
or by using this direct link:Royale Marine Stevens - double underwear

I'm not sure this video would have passed muster in the 60s, but there's an even funnier and sexier variant at the artist's site which definitely wouldn't!

Para Tom Taken To The Corrective Training Centre
by DaveAlan01

Basil Clavering seemed to favour shorts rather than underwear as punishment kit. I don't know if that was simply because of his personal taste or the taboo on visible underwear in society as a whole, which was more aggressively conservative back them.

He attempted to make sexy, tight shorts out of the baggy, non-elasticated products which were the only thing available at the time. His efforts generally resulted in something like the image above, with an impression of bulk at the front, but a much tighter fit at the rear. He used clever lighting to hint at frontal shapes, but they had to be very subtle to escape censure.

Unfortunately modern AI seems to be incapable of producing anything sexier than this and thinks military = medals. It has no understanding of British uniforms. Nevertheless, the shortness of the escorts' shorts in the image above is a good simulation of Royale Studios' take on 'dress' kit, perhaps seen to best advantage in the Soldier-Sailor storyette.

Clavering did have a para on his roster - Ron Wiltshire, but he never photographed the model in his own uniform, only as a Horse Guard in breeches. I don't think there's a single example of a beret in his output, but exposure to modern day Royal Marines might have changed his mind!

This disciplinary scenario (snipped from a video) fits the Royale style too, apart perhaps for the Guards wearing underwear. I think Clavering would have kept them in a uniform of some sorts.

Para Tom is handed over - by Dave Alan01

DaveAlan01 has also produced some police custody scenes. This is a scenario Clavering never covered, probably because it would have invited reprisals from the real force. In any case, the Police were so disliked by gay men in that era, because of the heavy-handed repression, that it was a perverse individual indeed that would find them sexually attractive. Clavering did do a storyette with Military Police which involved Tibor Urgay undressing in public.

I'm certain Clavering would have loathed jogging bottoms too, but the common association (in the UK) with the so-called underclass and thuggery would have certainly interested him. That connection makes this 'put in his place' image delicious indeed.

Great stuff! These video scenes make you wonder how Royale's work would have looked if they had used this medium. Would it have just looked like all the other modern porn? His amateur models would have struggled, I suspect. Especially if they had to speak! AI would have got him off that hook, but AI speech is very primitive currently, with caricatured American accents. Let's hope Brits get a look-in soon, but I'm not counting on it.

I'm looking forward to seeing a naval scenario in this vein, sailors were Claverings' inspiration and his bread and butter, after all.

Recent posts at the Royale Gallery

Cliff Smith by Hussar

This picture of Cliff Smith, by Hussar in 1963 (from a set of 3), is the latest addition to the mitchmen Royale Gallery. Cliff was one of the ever-present Royale boys, appearing in the 1958 'Stolen Motorcycle' set and the 1961 set 'Leather Merchants', that marked the breakaway of Dolphin Studio (later named Hussar).

He wore that studded leather belt in all 3 sets, suggesting it was his own. That subtle fetish ingredient positively erupted in 'Leather Merchants', seemingly paving the way for the sometimes bizarre fetish imagery of 'Guys In Uniform', notably 'Willing To Learn'.

The Cliff post follows a group related to the career of Ron Fenn - 'Tough Schoolmaster', 'Thief' and 'Black Leather', view all three at the Royale Gallery

The next projects are a full posting of 'Leather Merchants' and the completion of the Ron Fenn portfolio with 'The Wallet'.

Guys In Uniform Studio (completed)

1. Guys In Uniform - Sailor in the Rigging

Guys in Uniform Studio was set up in the mid 1970s, producing sexy pictures with a strong flavour of military discipline.

It was much inspired by the example set by Royale Studio in the late 1950s, the photo above directly references the 'Sailor in the Rigging' images of Royale Studio and Hussar. The personnel involved reputedly had connections of some sort with Basil Clavering's, Royale set-up.

2. Guys In Uniform - Double Discipline

Guys In Uniform created many Gym Discipline scenarios which also mirrored Royale storyettes, but without accessories like the gym horses that popped up in the Royale images, providing better context - and a handy platform for punishment.

3. Royale Studio - 'Through the Legs' pose from 'Soldier-Sailor'

Other GIU images copy the striking 'through the legs' poses which were a feature of Royale's work (notably Soldier-Sailor). I think Royale derived them from cinema, 'film noir' advertising. See 'Military Intimidation' for an excellent, Guys In Uniform example.

4. Guys In Uniform - Caning by Numbers, 'Dunces'

The creation of Royale-inspired imagery seems to have peaked with a set, which I have called 'Caning By Numbers' (since GIU didn't give them names). Although their imagery is new, it seems to closely copy the Royale Storyette 'Tough Schoolmaster', notably including the use of archaic, dunces caps. My article, 'Caning by Numbers', cross-references the similarities, picture by picture.

 ~

The pictures of both studios pushed at the boundaries of acceptability for their respective times. Royale's beefcake images flirted with homosexual innuendo and sadism, which was strictly taboo in the 1950s Britain, despite the proliferation of corporal punishment in boy's schools. By the mid 70s, when Guys in Uniform was formed, gay lifestyle magazines were commonplace and even frontal nudes were permissible (if flaccid). However, the combination of nudity and discipline scenarios' was still highly controversial and problematic.

5. Guys In Uniform - Double Discipline

This image is similar to Royale discipline scenarios, but they did not show their subjects undressed like this. Rear nudes appear in some Royale, solo sets but are almost non-existent in the storyettes, where the men wear shorts to be spanked. There are no Royale frontal nudes at all, but such images are commonplace in Guys in Uniform's work.

6. Guys In Uniform - The Investigation

Both Studios openly used genuine servicemen as models, particularly Royal Guardsmen (sometimes in authentic uniforms). This shocked the establishment and provoked police raids to seize their material. In Royale's day, anything to do with homosexuality in the forces was hushed up by the press, but in the case of Guys in Uniform there was a full-blown public scandal when a tabloid 'exposed' that real Guardsmen were posing for nude photographs in homosexual magazines. The specific images that sparked the row were those of the 'Caning by Numbers' series, image 4, above.

7. Guys In Uniform - The Harness

Guys in Uniform did venture into one area where Royale and Hussar had hardly scratched the surface - Leather and Rubber fetish.
Hussar's 'Leather Merchants' was their most significant contribution in the Royale era (see below).

Guys in Uniform went much further. The leather harness/apron shown in the picture above was part of a provocative (for its time) exploration of leather and rubber fetish. It was a subject which formed a major part of Guys in Uniform's output. They developed the visual language of domination and submission in a way that goes far beyond what Royale and Hussar did, a contribution to the emergence of the leather fetish scene that is probably more significant than it is given credit for.

In fact, a leather harness like this also features in Dolphin/Hussar's 'Leather Merchants' photo set...

8. Dolphin Photography - Leather Merchants

Leather Merchants was used for the launch of the Dolphin Photography off-shoot of Royale, later renamed 'Hussar'. It's powerful leather and rubber, biker theme marked a significant break with Royale's more cautious approach to biker imagery. Royale limited themselves to leather jackets and jeans with not a motorcycle in sight - notably in The Stolen Motorcycle, for example.

Leather Merchants showed models wearing and cross-dressing in some of the esoteric gear as though it was a club initiation ritual - and it includes a body harness.

9. Detail of an image from 'Leather Merchants'
(Dolphin Photography/Hussar)

In this image, Cliff Smith has put on the harness on, over the top of a leather shirt and shorts, so it's hard to distinguish the shapes.  The detail, however, looks almost identical to the Guys in Uniform one above (image 7). It seems likely that it is the same garment.

Documentation exists that named John Parkhurst, Basil Clavering's collaborator, as the proprietor of Hussar, so it seems fair to attribute the bold, fetish tone in Leather Merchants to him. It seems to be an uncanny foretaste of what was to come with Guys in Uniform, although we know of no direct connection between the two organisations, other than Charles Koestler's reported claim that he had been involved in the Royale set-up.

The Guys in Uniform Business

The 'Guys in Uniform' Studio has long suffered from being called 'Men in Uniform' in some quarters. However, it always used the 'Guys in Uniform' label in its short existence, as shown in the image below and image 2, above. There was never a Studio called 'Men In Uniform'

This misconception seems to have originated from the publication of the British Photographer's collection (Source 1), since the originator gave some of his scans titles beginning with MIU. An interesting, 2002 article by Squaddie John about the history and the connections between the two studios gives an account of how this came about. Formerly published at 'Milism' (now defunct), I have been given permission by the author to reproduce it at mitchmen - read the 'Milism' article.

10. Ad for Guys In Uniform in 'Him Exclusive' Sept 1975

Strictly speaking, 'Guys in Uniform' was a product of 'Studio 57', run by Charles Koestler and based in Linden Gardens, Notting Hill. Some of their advertisements showed this information.

This ad also shows they were using the same marketing technique as Royale - 'selection' sheets from which clients could choose which prints they wanted to buy. It was a sales methodology that was becoming outdated by then, and none of these selection sheets seem to have survived. It's not known if they were able to secure an income stream from them.

N.B. This advertisement was originally published in black and white, I have added the colour using AI.

11. Guys in Uniform Feature in 'Q International' v1 No3 (1976)

Like Royale and Hussar, Guys in Uniform supplied their images to the Gay Magazines of their time - including 'Q International', 'Him', 'Playguy' and 'Zipper'. We know that 'Him/Playguy' paid for them and provided free advertising (from a Daily Mirror article 20/10/75).

Many of the illustrations were printed in colour, which was not affordable in the 1960s for Royale, nor it's publishers. Unlike Royale, GIU don't seem to have reached out to US magazines, a link-up with 'Drummer' might have transformed the business. They do turn up in European fetish magazines, however.

12. Guys In Uniform - Cover of Uniform Magazine, Issue 2

Guys in Uniform also published their own glossy 'Uniform Magazine' starting ca.1978. Surprisingly, though, it only carried black and white photos, although the ad above (image 10) makes it clear that they were selling colour prints. It was intended to be quarterly but lasted only for 3 issues. The heavy bias towards mature men and fetish may have been too niche.

 ~

Historical information about Guys in Uniform's origins is scanty, the earliest dated reference is in the mid-1975 issue of Him Exclusive, No 6. They must have been operating for some time before that producing the images. They survived the Guardsman furore in the Autumn of that year and continued at least until the 'Uniform' magazine appeared in 1978. But there's nothing documented after that, except a magazine report in the early 80s that stated that the studio had closed 'some years ago'. It's probably fair to date it as 1974-79.

Guys In Uniform 2 - Caning By Numbers

Read the first post in this series

The second post in this series continues the sequence of 'Guys In Uniform' images immortalised for collectors by the tag 'Numbers'. These were assigned to the pictures by the publisher of the so-called 'British Photographers Collection' (see Royale Sources Nos 1 & 2).

This particular set seems to recreate, almost exactly, the action of the (fragmented) Royale Studio set, 'Tough Schoolmaster', which is being posted at the Royale blog in parallel with this article. I will reference the similarities in the text.

The set is also significant, historically, in that it resulted in a full-blown public scandal in 1976, after it was published. The use of serving Guardsmen to pose for the pictures was uncovered by the Daily Mirror tabloid and their sensational articles led to allegations of 'vice rings', police raids, questions in Parliament and discharge from the Army for some of the unfortunate models.

This set was originally reviewed at this blog in 2010, that article is significantly expanded here with some images rarely seen before. I have reconstructed it from various internet sources including copies of British, gay magazines of the 70s. In the absence of a thumbnail sheet or catalogue information, I have sequenced them using clothing continuity and an imagined storyline, matching that of 'Tough Schoolmaster'.

Guys In Uniform - Caning by Numbers 01

This is the nearest I can find to a starting image for this set. It shows a military student in gym kit, standing 'at ease', but rigidly correct, as he would on the parade ground. He's clearly under the control of the Officer-like gentleman at his side, who I take to be the Instructor.

This image (recovered from a GIU Studio advertisement in 'Him Exclusive' No 8, 1975) seems to be a fragment of a bigger scene, there is another 'student' in this series, and it's likely he appears at the right in the full picture. It looks as if it might be a disciplinary situation.

The original of this picture was printed in black and white, I have colourised it using AI.

Guys In Uniform - Caning by Numbers 02

This picture shows both athletes. We don't have much information about the names of GIU's models, so, for simplicity, I refer to the two students in this article as No 3 and No 4.

The Instructor is preparing to punish them, a prospect that is filling No 3 with dismay. Presumably he's first up. The flimsy shorts they are both wearing amplify the threat.

No 4 is wearing a dunce's cap, an archaic punishment for failing to learn to the teacher's satisfaction. It's possible the missing half of image-1 might have shown him wearing it, with the other two men witnessing his discomfort. The dunce's cap immediately makes a connection with Royale's 'Tough Schoolmaster' storyette, specifically image 03 of that set, where a similar scene is enacted.

~

The original of this picture was printed in black and white, I have colourised it using AI. There also exists a version where the students aren't wearing any shorts at all, it's an ingenious, later tweak that is very sexy, but the clothing combination doesn't fit into the storyline. See it here.

Guys In Uniform - Caning by Numbers 03

There's a jump in continuity here. Athlete No 3 has clearly just had his taste of the cane. We don't have an image of that, but there are lots more like it to come. The Officer is signalling a glum-looking No 4 to come forward and take his place. Notice the strange shadow falling on his lower body, it surely can't be an accident!

A clip board can be seen standing on the table which says "Set 3, Test 4". It might simply be the equivalent of a clapper board, indicating that this is the fourth scene of the third GIU photo set. Alternatively it might mean that these two men are members of Set (or Class) 3, and have either just failed Test 4, or are in the process of being subjected to it.

Guys In Uniform - Caning by Numbers 04

The two athletes swap places (and hats) and No 4's punishment (or test?) commences. The erotic quality and authenticity makes for an interesting comparison with the Royale equivalent. The GIU picture benefits from sexier shorts and colour, but Royale's tighter composition scores for dramatic effect.

Guys In Uniform - Caning by Numbers 05

The underlings rebel and the sadistic Officer is brought to his knees to receive a dose of his own punishment.
No 3 has somehow lost his vest in the struggle, we see it lying on the floor. There's an intriguing ambiguity about his position, squatting, equally exposed, astride the Instructor. The dunce's cap is symbolically set aside. It's edited out altogether in some circulating copies of this image.

Compare this image with Tough Schoolmaster, image No 4. It's compelling evidence of the Royale inspiration behind this series. (Which is not to disparage the GIU versions as mere copies. They stand up as pictures in their own right). In Royale's version the cap is more realistically lying discarded on the floor.

Guys In Uniform - Caning by Numbers 06

The target is clarified in this variation. Royale too liked to dwell on the mechanics of this form of punishment.

Guys In Uniform - Caning by Numbers 07

Somehow, the Instructor regains control and here seems to be singling out No 3 (on the floor) as his attacker.  That seems borne out by the grappling between them in images 5 and 6. In Royale's storyline the rebel is more obvious (image 03), but we don't have that moment from this story. No 4 seems to have changed sides and is holding his colleague. A 'collaborator' sub-text also runs through Royale's storyline (e.g. image 01).

This image defied all my attempts to satisfactorily clarify or colourise it.

Guys In Uniform - Caning by Numbers 08

In the final sequence of images, both athletes have shed their numbered singlets. Fortunately, they have different coloured shoes to provide continued identification. The Instructor takes his revenge, using restraints to ensure this student at least can't escape retribution.

Surprisingly it's No 4 in the firing line, whose role appears quite passive in the other images we have.  His apparent collaboration in image 7 hasn't got him off the hook.
This development is different to the Royale story where it's the rebel who is strung up. In this case, the rebel, his classmate, watches with an inscrutable expression. In these final images we can see he's wearing spiked track shoes, which might have made the rebellion clashes interesting!

This image makes a further telling link with 'Tough Schoolmaster' which features an identical, restraint arrangement (image 05). That image gives a clue to what happens next in this set.

Guys In Uniform - Caning by Numbers 09

As in the Royale image, the 'collaborator' helps to lower the offender's shorts. It's a great moment.

Notice how the Instructor turns away from the camera to hide his face in these more sensitive images. We now know that these were serving Guardsmen, so it's an understandable precaution. He is identifiable in the earlier, more innocuous images.

Guys In Uniform - Caning by Numbers 10

The instructor tells his assistant to step aside, so his aim will be unobstructed. No 3 looks glum, perhaps having experienced it himself already, or expecting to be next.

Guys In Uniform - Caning by Numbers 11

The Instructor seems to be indulging in some sadistic teasing here, which is something of a tradition in this genre. The visual effect is impressive, No 3 looks fascinated. The photographer has cropped this image more tightly than the rest of the set to emphasise the drama.

Guys In Uniform - Caning by Numbers 12

The coup de grâce produces a very good image indeed. We can only speculate whether it's good acting or a real reaction. The sagging shorts provide a final discomforting twist.

Guys In Uniform - Caning by Numbers 13

In this image, it appears that No 3 gets his reward for betraying his classmate. There's an item in the top corner which might tell us more if we could see it properly.

In this image we can see more clearly, the flimsy, lingerie-like nature of the student's shorts. It seems a less masculine look than Royale's, very traditional styles which had plain fronts and gathered waistbands. Scott, who was renowned for his tight shorts in Royale's time, sometimes tucked the waistband inside the shorts to produce a lower top-line something like this.

~

*Sequencing most GIU sets is very difficult, because we don't have any catalogue information and the usual method of tracking continuity of clothing and the action generally runs into contradictions that can't be resolved except by conjecturing a storyline that has no supporting evidence. This was the case with Set 1 in this series, which I eventually split into two. I've managed to come up with a sequence that works for this one, helped by cross-referencing the Royale storyette

In truth, there's evidence that some of the sets were not even conceived as stories. The Guys In Uniform house magazine, 'Uniform', grouped many of the images under non-descriptive headings like 'The Barrack Room', 'Attack' and 'Authority' although 'The Sneak' and 'The Card Sharp' do suggest a narrative was intended. Set No 1 was called 'The School Prefect' in Uniform magazine, but I've skated over that connection for obvious reasons. In any case it doesn't help with sequencing them.

Milism reprint

A reprint of the 'long-lost', 2002, Milism article about Royale Studio by Squaddie John has been added to the mitchmen, Royale Studio blog.

It's a review of Royale's modus operandi slightly jumbled up with references to 'Guys in Uniform'. The narrative is somewhat biased towards spanking but also has useful comments about the UK political and social environment in the 50s and 60s, particularly in relation to members of the armed forces. There's also an interesting postscript about the origins of the so-called British Photographers' collection which was responsible for most of the best quality images we have today (like the one above).

I have had to restore the illustrations for the article, drawing on title information and my memory of the site, but there are one or two I'm unsure of, so I'm putting out an appeal to any Royale enthusiast who remembers the original article at Milism, to check my reprint and see if they can help with picture identities.

My thanks to Squaddie John for giving me permission to re-post it.

Guys in Uniform 1 - Double Discipline (Part 'B')

Continued from Part 'A'

Guys In Uniform - Double Discipline B01

The two men under punishment have now put on snug-fitting singlets (or vests) with impersonal numbers on the back. The Instructor has ordered them to lie down, leaving their shorts still lowered, so that their backsides are visible. It's the horizontal equivalent of facing the wall, a psychological rebuke, expressing rejection and isolation. The punisher has put away his cane, but I imagine his tongue can sting these men almost as well.

This photo has a curious composition, with the protagonists confined to the boundaries and a vast empty space filling most of the picture (which I have filled with logos out of desperation!) The picture is taken from a magazine, part of a montage in which another, overlapping image filled much of that space (see below). However, it seems unlikely that the photos were taken with that magazine layout in mind. The combination of upright and prone figures in a picture is a challenge for any photographer, as Royale Studios also found.  The original photo may amount to more than this, of course, and not be so awkwardly cropped.

Guys In Uniform - Double Discipline B02

In the second picture the men have changed out of their shorts altogether, leaving them crumpled at the feet of No 4.  No 3's singlet is very close-fitting, he continues to be the more striking of the pair.

The second stool, last seen in image A03 has been reintroduced.

Guys In Uniform - Double Discipline B03

The two men are ordered to sit on the stools. The corded seats quickly bring new discomfort to their just-caned bottoms. The instructor stands watching them with hands on hip, as if waiting for something. They just hang their heads. Their overhanging bottoms make a strikingly original, teasing image. As if in response, there's a rare sighting of the front of the instructor's shorts, which do not suggest he's totally disappointed with them.

Once again, the editor's cropping seems overdone on the right, resulting in another, oddly unbalanced composition.

Guys In Uniform - Double Discipline B04

This unconventional scenario, now takes a new turn.
It appears No 3 has been detained, kept in after school, as it were.
He slumps on the floor, minus his training shoes, a sign that he's not going anywhere soon. The instructor has also taken off his shorts, as if they are now equals. It hints at a steamy closing ceremony, involving more sacrifices by No 3.

In Britain there used to be light-hearted debate about whether, milk should be added to the cup before or after pouring tea. There seems to a similar divide about sex and spanking. And yes, I know that many prefer their spanking without any sex at all.

There's another (unavoidable) blank corner here. They all fit together very well in 'Uniform Magazine' spread (shown below). But it's hard to imagine this was all intentional. The uncluttered backgrounds don't help.

Uniform Magazine, Vol 3 p41

Guys In Uniform - Double Discipline B05

In this picture, it seems that the tables have been turned on the sadistic instructor. Bereft of his shorts (just visible on the floor with the distinctive, black waist band), he rests his forearms on a stand rather like a butchers block, with a padded top set at an ideal height for bending over. A cane stands propped against the side, ready for the arrival of another dispenser of rough justice, a higher authority.

Maybe picture B04 is actually showing the waiting room, with both men in line for a painful reprimand, perhaps having been caught having sex after spanking(!) Maybe this set ought to be named 'Triple Discipline'!

Guys In Uniform - Double Discipline B06

In this picture we see the instructor slumped on the floor, looking distinctly down in the mouth, if not so much in other departments. I have sequenced these images to suit my own narrative, since no thumbnail sheets are known for Guys in Uniform sets. I imagined this as the aftermath of the Instructor's supposed comeuppance. Equally, it could be him, still awaiting his turn, after No 3 was summoned to the Punishment Room.

~

There is a further image that doesn't seem to be part of this set, but also features the distinctive vest with coloured hoops.

Guys In Uniform -Athlete with Cane

This is not obviously the man wearing the hooped vest in the preceding pictures, but his predicament complements my narrative there perfectly. He's strapped to the four corners of a board or box in a way that prevents escape but not all movement. A cane leans against his bottom, an unsubtle clue to the reason for his restraint.

He's wearing shorts, which have been hitched-up to provide an open target area. His gym socks have been removed and dropped at his feet to one side.

He's also wearing an incongruous, broad leather belt-cum-corset, with multiple straps at the back. Probably put on him by the men who restrained him. This fetish garment features in many Guys In Uniform sets with leather/rubber themes, but this cross-over picture is usual. It suggests the meeting of two worlds - wholesome athletic activity and dark, secret fetish.

This is an initiation, perhaps or a peeping Tom about to be taught the error of his ways. His expression suggests that he's realised from the restraints and the tightness of his strange garment that this warning is going to be very different to anything he has experienced before.

The next Guys in Uniform set featured at mitchmen is 'Caning By Numbers'.
