'mitchmen' sponsors a collection of photographs taken in the 50s and 60s by the British 'Royale Studio' and its off-shoot 'Dolphin Photography' later called 'Hussar'.

  Royale was renowned for its military and sporting, photo storyettes, which typically featured authentic military uniforms, tight sailor pants and shorts. Plot lines frequently involved undressing, captivity and disciplinary situations.

They also published photo sets of the models. 

This archive is the first to name the models and link them to their photo sets and storyettes. It also sets them in the historical context of the late 50s and 60s when decriminalisation of gay men was beginning to unfold in the UK.

The images are organised at two separate sites, 

  • The Royale blog (royale-hussar-studio-by-mitchmen) has as an index, listing the storyettes and models with links to all their photos in the Gallery. This blog also hosts general articles about Royale and the people and places associated with it.

Below it, in a separate box, are listed the most recent articles at the blog with clickable links. From there you can link onwards to the gallery.

There's also a selection of Royale posts at this blog. These are being duplicated and replaced by posts at the 2 newer Royale sites above. However, you can explore them by clicking on 'GIU/Royale' in the label list towards the bottom of the right sidebar. 
 
GIU refers to 'Guys In Uniform' (aka Studio 57) which tried to revive the Royale model in the mid 1970s, with some success. Guys in Uniform sets are posted here at mitchmen. You can find out more at Guys In Uniform
