Vintage Bondage - Leonard Chambers

This post was updated in Dec 2023 with additional images including bondage images 3 and 4

1

Vintage bondage imagery is usually pretty disappointing with ropes that usually aren't tied at all, but just wound round limbs or simply draped, and models who look as if they are suffering no inconvenience at all. These pictures of Leonard Chambers in a hogtie by AMG are a cut above that. The ropes are still loose but it's a genuine restraint position and Chambers muscular body reflects that stress, particularly in the image above.

2

The draped podium on which Chambers is balanced is a typical device from 60's beefcake imagery. The model would normally stand or sit on it, imitating a classical statue. This flavour of artiness was supposed to deflect accusations of smut. With the model in bondage it conjures up more adventurous associations with ancient, ritual sacrifice. This probably seems more eyebrow-raising to us now than it did then - that was the era of Tarzan, Lost Worlds and 'She', when scantily clad movie heroes routinely faced such bondage and unpleasantness on their way to ultimate victory.

3

This example from the set (added in Dec 2023) is the clearest I have found so far and gives a great view of Chamber's face and arm musculature. To modern eyes this arrangement conjures up a fantasy of the model as a trophy capture, displayed for sale or awaiting some other fate, probably non-terminal, but possibly quite taxing. The slight overhang of his body at each end provides an extra element of discomfort.

4

This fuzzy image was a thumbnail used to advertise the set in magazine ads. The white restraint cord is barely visible around Chambers wrist, but the background pattern confirms it's connection with the images above.

In his bondage pictures above Chambers has the look of a typical 50/60's movie hero but here on the beach he's more the fun-loving boy next door. In the 50's the motorcycle was every young man's passport to freedom, since few could afford a car. It was an accessory that added to his desirability.

I'm not one of those who decry the posing pouch/G-string but would admit that this picture probably gives ammunition to the detractors. This version of the garment seems to be simultaneously revealing and baggy - or is it just badly padded?

This pose is not exactly modest but showcases the model's muscularity - and that dubious pouch.

I wonder if the bottle is used for Eau de Toilet!

This image shows restraint of a different kind. Images like this regularly appear up to the present day. It encapsulates a  romantic yearning to totally possess a beloved - or if you think about the genie in the bottle, the desire to control and contain a more powerful being. Both are universal and timeless desires and surely are the part of the essence of the bondage fetish.

If you like your men bottled, this might appeal even more, the flask shape being more constraining and vaguely phallic. I imagine the technique needed to produce this image in 1950 was less straight-forward than it would be today. They have even managed to conjure the effect of seeing the model through slightly clouded glass.

There are lots of images of Leonard Chambers on the net, use a search engine to find him with 'vintage model' or similar if necessary. There's an interesting story about his tragic death at Vintage Male

A-Z of Fetish Artists - Soto

Soto - The River Ordeal
Soto usually depicts fantasy beasts being beastly to each other, as in the HellBoy stories, which is not my normal stamping ground for this series. He also uses computer assistance in finishing his work but I'm giving him a mention for his human drawings. This sketch of a man who has just been spanked with an oar over a upturned boat certainly qualifies as fetish art. I love the designer G-string dangling from the oar as supplementary evidence of his humiliation.

Soto - Casualty
Underwear removal is the focus of 'Casualty' too where a burly soldier is being rip-stripped and felt out by an inquisitive and seductive tentacle organism. The spent cartridges on the floor suggest our man is out of ammo and instead of going down fighting, he is taking the line of least resistance, preparing for the inevitable 'ending' with as much courage and dignity as he can muster. He has helpfully assumed the bog standard, open legged, sitting stance which seems mandatory for tentacle rummaging.
As tentacle images go, this is beautifully understated and manages to suggest that such creatures have more discerning sensibilities than one would have guessed from the countless images of aggressive orifice filling, supplied by other artists. The warrior's face turned aside in passive revulsion is fabulous. I suppose the mothers of soldiers, like all mothers, advise them to change into clean underwear before battle (in case of accidents) but this chunky warrior's panties are surprisingly flimsy and provocative, scarcely concealing his own little 'tentackle', it's a nice touch of human weakness. Soto's fully coloured images are beautifully crafted and textured. The murky lighting and indistinct detail is not unusual in his work, it's highly atmospheric, but frustrating at times.

Soto - Just A Raped Guy 5
The final image is a group of sketches that explores the multifunctional abilities of tentacles to coil, restrain, pull, squeeze, caress and probe the human body. They work well as a group and the simplicity of the individual sketches is more effective than a single complex drawing which tries to show dozens of tentacles with everything happening at once. His tentacle imagining is quite interesting but there's also some nice body sketching here, I particularly like the man's stubble detail (bottom right)

See more at The art of J C Soto, if you're image searching, he also uses the name 'HellBoy'

A-Z of Fetish Artists -Quaintance

The letter 'Q' has only one artist who meets the criteria for my A-Z - George Quaintance, whose 1950's images of Latin men and sexy cowboys with distinctively sensual faces and bodies are so well known, it hardly seems appropriate to consider him a fetish artist and yet....
Quaintance's art abounds with erotically-flavoured imagery of death and danger and men menaced by deadly weapons. It is often disguised as Hollywood costume epic material and devoid of explicit sexual content but nevertheless, it is highly charged for fetishists who take the trouble to look.

Quaintance - Bacchant

Take 'Bacchant' (meaning a drunken reveller), for example. It's a pretty picture forging a fanciful connection between an attractive young man and a still-life of grapes. An allegory for the irresistible appeal of alcohol? Perhaps. Or if you prefer it's a naked, young man held in sensual bondage by a plant whose leaves appear to be intimately brushing his body as well as covering it. The tendrils wound round his limbs are a good deal more subtle than your average 'tentacle' picture but are obviously in charge of the situation. Plants, here are like Platter's devils - psychological fetishes, alluring fantasies impossible to fulfil in reality.

Quaintance - Aztec Sacrifice

'Aztec Sacrifice' is a more well known picture and has obvious fetishistic elements embellished with a glossy and glamorous presentation. The bondage is rather lifeless and fake, but it's sexual intent is pretty obvious from in the shapely golden G-string worn by the spread-eagled captive. He actually appears to be more of an entranced high priest than a victim, coldly presiding over the execution of the two luscious, near naked, young men who lie at his feet pierced by arrows. Freud would have something to say about all that, but for those who appreciate the more extreme varieties of fetish imagery no interpreting is necessary.

Quaintance - Slave Market

Slave Market shows men chained together in pairs under the whip of the overseer. It's possible see these last two pictures as representations of gay oppression but I cannot substantiate that impression.

This slave picture is rather too posed, but the little cameo of the two collapsed slaves injects some artistic quality, drama and also some daring erotic suggestion via the positioning of the dark haired slave's head and left arm. As always in this era, seek out the hidden eroticism!
Given the oppressive environment in which he worked, Quaintance's work is quite astonishing. These pictures don't really do justice to his technical skill. All in all I'm quite happy to list him alongside our other fetish exponents.
I'm not aware of any website for Quaintance, but Googling images brings up plenty of examples.
There is a review of the Taschen book of his complete works at Homodersiribus

Tom Of Finland - Tailors and Hidden Eroticism

In my review of Royale Studio's Soldier-Sailor set, picture 11, I remarked how Tom of Finland used the 'man and his kneeling dresser' theme in pictures produced about the same time. The picture I was thinking of is shown below, it was produced in 1959.

Tom of Finland - At The Tailor's
.
Inside leg measurement is a classic subject for corny innuendo, Tom's young tailor has a good fistful at the top end of the tape but the young man seems completely oblivious of it. Like Royale, Tom plays down the erotic intent. But this picture is relevant to Royale in another way, as it also contains disguised sexual content like Royale's pictures did. If you don't know the piece already, look at the image on the back cover of the fat man's magazine and you will discover exactly what he thinks of the young man being fitted out. I can't recall any other picture by Tom that has a hidden explicit message like this - but perhaps I've just not spotted them yet.
 .

Tom of Finland - Fine Adjustments
  .
The second 'dresser' picture is from 1963 and, together with the previous picture from 1959, brackets the Royale era quite neatly. This time it's a modelling theme and exploits the idea of a hunk being 'adjusted' by a lesser mortal. Tom uses the clothing in a much more adventurous way. The G-string is extremely revealing and its unconventional strap, made from chain, plunges down between the model's buttocks, creating a sexy rearview which even today gives a bit of a jolt. Note how Tom uses the mirror in exactly the same way as Royale did to provide this second viewpoint. The dresser's adjustments are less intimate this time, but as he bends in his ever-so-tight jeans, his backside seems to have caught the hunky model's eye.
.
Tom of Finland - Measuring Up

Picture 3 is less well known, a locker room scene whose date I can't discover, but the frontal nudity fixes it later. The fashion looks circa 1970. This picture captures the 'kneeling dresser' pose in classic form and the drawing of this particular young man is rather nice. Tom used submissive kneeling quite a lot around this time in a variety of situations. In the best ones, like 'the careless motorcyclist', the victim is being forced down.

This image is a curious mixture of the explicit and the coy. The spectator's cock is rather substantial but points downwards - at one point in the crazy world of censorship this was a genuine yardstick of acceptability. It doesn't really add a lot to the picture but did represent a statement of liberation to it's audience at the time.

The proximity of the dresser's face to the jocks equipment is another fairly obvious erotic feature, but what exactly is the dresser measuring? Inches count in this area! What is he doing with his hidden left hand? Probably up to no good judging by the various facial expressions.
The tape measure is quite a useful accessory here, visually highlighting the jocks backside and providing a sense of his being temporarily captured while his 'vital statistics' are assessed.

I have a recollection that there is another picture by Tom on this theme but I haven't been able to find it. It shows a kneeling shop assistant assisting a young man into a very revealing new outfit but in this picture the assistant is very obviously embarrassed. If anyone can help with this, please get in touch with me via the comments feature or the e-mail link on my profile.

Royale Studios 17 - The Soldier-Sailor Set (FJSS) - 9

The FJSS series of 21 pictures reviewed in previous articles covers a lot of ground and it feels as though there must have been many more images produced during the shoot. Maybe they were discarded for reasons of quality or content. Perhaps they were simply kept back for lack of publication space. It's tantalising to think there might be some around today.

Fred Collins (L) and John Skilling (R) Wrestling by Royale Studio

In modern times we expect a series of pictures to end with the men naked and grappling with each other, but the best I can do is to add this one of John and Fred wrestling, not quite nude but nearly. Geeks like me will notice the Royale code FJWR = Fred-John-WRestling.

Fred Collins and Tibor Urgay by Royale Studio

This picture (right) of Fred from a set with Tibor Urgay shows Royale could do upper body shots - and what a body Fred has! We barely glimpsed it in the FJSS set. I suspect the demands of creating special 'hidden' erotic effects with shadows got in the way of highlighting muscularity. Or perhaps the uniforms were thought sufficient by themselves. By the way, I suspect the G-strings here have been 'sanitised' .

John Skilling by Royale Studio

Here is John Skilling, truly naked and lying on the same wrestling mat as picture 1 above. It's a classic 50's/60's glamour pose, but rather risque without clothes on.
He looks very cute and urchin-like with those dirty feet.
.
John Skilling, nude by Royale Studio

Finally another picture of John nude, more classically posed for safety,
but showing off his 'wasp' waist and succulent bottom extremely well.

These pictures give us a glimpse of what is missing from the uniform sets.
I would love to see them recreated by a skilled modern photographer
unfettered by constraints on nudity and eroticism.

Leather Sex Appeal - 6

A good leather man can make even Gloves seem menacing, as though the hands become transformed, hardened by the outer shield.

When it comes to leather I'm a great believer in the dictum, 'less is more' and I've tried to select pictures that reflect that. This man wears only gloves and G-string but there isn't any lessening of the intimidating 'leather aura'.

There is more leather in my current series at mitchmen (Yahoo) see sidebar

Men sharing clothes 5 - White G-strings

Dean Lahr in G-string

I think the G-string/posing pouch is a much neglected item of apparel. I know many hate them and it's not real clothing of course but I find them sexy provided that they look 'right', i.e. clean and crisp and showing off the lumpy shape inside. The diminutive dimensions may frustrate size enthusiasts anxious to see the model's true potential, but they suggest constraint to me and a hint of humiliation (as in “You don't expect me to get into that do you?”).

Billy Joe Carr in the same

As far as the 'sharing clothes' theme goes you could hardly conceive a more intimate garment. The men in these pictures from WPG studio (Link:Western Photography Guild) ) sure know how to wear them!
