| Lüger/Colt - Fanciful (Fanciable?) Sailor |
The recent posting of 'The Wallet' at the Royale Studio blog brought this image to mind. It merely seems saucy to us today, but in the 60s it was shocking, not simply because it showed a bare bottom, that was OK for women and old men to do in the cause of comedy and ridicule. This picture, however, showed the bare bottom of a man in his prime and smacked of homosexuality. The artist even had the audacity to make the opening of his pants in the shape of a heart. As if homosexuality had anything to do with love! Bah! And that's not even counting the aspersions cast on the proud men of the Navy (as if)!
This imagining of a muscular sailor straightening his cap and seemingly about to go out on the town in backless pants showed confidence in being gay and mocked the effeminate stereotyping of gay men. Its daring nature limited its circulation in the wider world so it may not have had much impact in terms of advancing Gay Liberation, but it was very good for morale!

Jim French - Sailor Straightening his cap (1967-9)
French's photo which inspired the 'heart' image is not so brazen, but still has the tang of effeminacy for bigots.
It's not effeminate, it's being gay,
it's being human and Proud of your sexuality.
