Jobs were scarce in the country, so Ryan took the decision to leave home and move to the town. It worked, he quickly found a job he liked with friendly workmates. Particularly Sam, who befriended him and taught him a lot he'd never imagined when he lived in the sticks.
Ryan liked living in the town, but before long, he was missing his folks. Unfortunately he hadn't saved enough to pay for the return fare. Then Sam told him about hitchhiking. He explained that although it could be hard work, he could use a few tricks to get motorists to stop for him. He also told him the best picking up place to start with, just outside town.
When Ryan got there it seemed a pretty lonely road and not very promising at all. But Sam had warned him, the trip may take longer than you expect, but just go with the flow. So he waited - for best part of an hour, with any result. Then he saw a car coming in the distance and decided he'd better deploy Sam's 'never fails' trick. To his delight the car stopped for him, appropriately enough it was a pick-up.
Ryan made his way to the passenger side thinking he'd be tucked up in bed in no time. He was right about that.
