Royale Studio 6 - Sailor and Teddy Boy (ARTICLE SUPERCEDED)

This article has now been replaced by a much extended one
at the mitchmen Royale Studio blog (25th March 2023)

The Gym style punishment in the last post also featured in my review of Guys in Uniform material and it's quite an interesting erotic power scenario. For the ordinary serviceman, the stiff formality of the uniform has a protective character and hides his individuality. When he is made to change into flimsy, briefer gym kit his body is more exposed but he also loses that shield of anonymity and membership of the 'pack'. The dispenser of punishment remains in his own uniform which reinforces his authority and the subservience of the victim.

Today's post continues the caning theme but features a rather different 'uniform' situation as a sailor disciplines a Teddy boy. At this time shortly after the Second World War, most British men were conscripted at 18 into 'National Service', a 3 year spell in one of the armed forces. Uniforms were thus a common sight on the streets and still commanded respect. Teddy boys (named after their supposedly Edwardian dress) represented youthful rebellion against all this authority and conformity with their flamboyant clothing and hair styles (think Elvis). Alcohol fueled rivalry between the two groups sometimes erupted into fighting.

Sailor with cane
This series features a particularly good image of the muscular sailor in his bell bottoms, looming thoughtfully over the prostrate Teddy boy who sports an authentic 'quiff' and sideburns. I'm not sure jeans were part of the 'uniform', I think they belong to a different 'tribe' but I might be wrong about that.

Military Discipline (Navy Style) for the Rebel

In the second picture the rebel gets his come-uppance. Although it's an unreal spanking pose these uncluttered studio shots are visually attractive and show the models off, inviting closer inspection. This one actually shows the cane in blurred motion which is quite a rarity, even these days when no holds are barred. It tells the viewer that although these may be models posing formally, there was real pain going on at one point. Perhaps to the total surprise of the recipient, a delicious conjecture!

I'm not absolutely certain this is a Royale picture although the sailor model is from the right era and the stylistic details of his clothing look right. Assuming it is, however, it surprises me a little that the Teddy boy's jeans don't have the same tightness and flimsiness we expect in these pictures. Instead they look disappointingly tough and protective. The sailor outfits were especially made of thin fabric so as to be revealing, jeans have more complex detail and would be more of a challenge to reproduce this way, perhaps this excursion into 'civvies' was strictly a one-off and not worth the trouble.

Royale Studio 4 - 'Bullies' - A Classic Sailor Caning (rev 27/05/22)

Royale Studio - Bullied Sailor

This photo is one of a three, related, spanking images that rank amongst Royale Studio's most memorable and well known. They show a sailor being held down over a vaulting horse and caned.
He has a manly, gym trained physique with formidable thighs which amply fill his tight, white shorts. His quiffed hair places him firmly in the Elvis era.

The man restraining him is wearing high-waisted trousers which were normal fashion in the 1950/60's. They look odd and dated to us but this image must have been very sexy back then. His white armless vest/singlet isn't everyday naval uniform. It suggests he is a PT instructor which fits with the use of a gym vaulting horse. Plain singlets like this were also used in Hussar's 'PT Class'  (Hussar Studio was another Royale brand name). Personally I think that military 'dress' gym kit is more attractive, but that's another post.

Tucking bell-bottoms into gaiters was normal when 'on duty' and I have been assured by 'Sailor Al' that gaiters worn with dress shorts were proper dress too. This combination also appears in some images from the (related) Guys In Uniform Studio (GIU).

I'll come back to these pictures in the second half of this article,
which is where I think they fit in the story.

Royale Studio - BULLIES - Catalogue Image A

The three famous pictures mentioned above belong to the 'Bullies' set and are usually all that ever gets posted of it. The official thumbnail for the set is shown above, taken from Royale's Catalogue Sheet 7. You can immediately see it's the same punisher here in his 'wife-beater' vest/singlet and high waisted trousers (which look sexier here).

As is often the way with Royale images, it's less obvious that the victim is the same man apart from his tousled hair. He's not wearing the same clothes, not even the same belt. He also looks less chunky, although his arms are very muscular.

Royale Studio - BULLIES - Catalogue Description

Royale's catalogue description outlines a story of bullying which sounds calculating and brutal but less elaborate than the water torments we saw dished out in 'Navy Romeo' and 'Navy Gash'. The catalogue image above seems to depict the deck-scrubbing part of the punishment. I haven't been able to identify what the 'surprise' ending is because most of the 24 pictures are missing. The images I do have are presented below in my best guess of what the set sequence might be and numbered according to that.

The picture pricing given in Royale's Catalogue may seem a little confusing and contradictory. The 24 pix for 10/- (50p) offer at the top relates to the thumbnail sheet which would have had good enough thumbnails to warrant buying in it's own right. Underneath it gives the price of 7x5 inch enlargements. 3/6 is the pre-decimalisation equivalent of 17.5p now.

Royale Studio - BULLIES 1 - Advert Image

It's David Reed (more usually known as David Reid) who plays the bullied sailor in this series. This picture appears to show him being dragged from his bunk by the bullies, so it might well be image No 1. I found it in a small ad* for Royale in a beefcake magazine, hence the poor quality. Fortunately it is specifically attributed to this series in the ad but you can also see the the man on the right is wearing that same armless singlet/vest and high-waisted bell bottoms. (That bulge on the left also crops up later, if you'll pardon the expression)

The camp bed used as a bunk substitute in this picture also appears fleetingly in Royale's 'Unapproved' series (mitchmen set 8, awaiting revision) and so, incidentally does David Reid .

*The Royale 04 Zip file which I will upload to the mitchmen Royale Studio Open Archive contains a copy of the magazine ad I extracted this picture from.

Royale Studio - BULLIES 2

This is a bigger version of Catalogue Image 'A' and it gives us a more immediate sense of the strap about to descend. There's a faint suggestion of weals and bruising on David's back. These guys mean business! There's also a decent shot of the other bully's face. I suppose his bare feet may be connected to David's shoe cleaning task, mentioned in the set description.

*The Royale 04 Zip file which I will upload to the mitchmen Royale Studio Open Archive contains another version of  Bullies-2, smaller but better quality. Probably taken from a thumbnail sheet.

Royale Studio - BULLIES 3 (Catalogue Image B)

This picture is a second thumbnail from the same Royale Catalogue Sheet No 7. It gives a better view of the victim's face. The two tormentors casually lean against the wall to supervise him, a neat and clever composition. The bare-footed one on the left seems positively excited by the situation (it's that bulge again).

The sequence of names given for the actors in Royale's description (above) looks as though it matches the left to right order in this picture, because the man in the middle is definitely David Reed/Reid . He was a bodybuilder who featured in a number of other Royale sets, he also appeared in the beefcake magazines of the day and those images help to identify him here

(a separate article with more pictures of David Reid will follow this post - LINK PENDING).

The two Johns mentioned in the description don't appear by name in any other sets in the catalogues I have, but as we know, Royale's names are not entirely reliable nor consistent (e.g. Reed - Reid!).

It was unusual for Royale to give provide than one thumbnail of a set in their catalogues so they must have rated it highly themselves. Unfortunately I don't have a better version of the second one. It obviously belongs to the same scene as BULLIES-2  but you can decide for yourselves whether it precedes or follows it's companion. The sequence I have used is the same way round as they are presented on the catalogue page. i.e. they hit him first then stand back and watch him working.

Royale Studio - BULLIES 4

The image with which I started this post appears to be a continuation of the punishment theme. But why is he now wearing full dress uniform instead of bare top and belted gym shorts, is this really the same set?

I don't think there is any question that the tormentor on the right is the same man in the same clothes. But in addition, if you compare the creases in his trousers in Bullies 4 to those in Bullies 2, particularly those distinctive looping shapes just above the gaiters at the back, they are almost identical. That means these two pictures must have been taken in the same session.

I can't prove conclusively it's the same David in both pictures above. Sometimes I think there's a disturbing resemblance to Simon Cowell! However BULLIES 6, below, which is normally grouped with this picture does offer a more convincing face and hair match.

If you refer to my separate article on David Reid (LINK PENDING) you'll see how his facial appearance does seem to vary in different shoots. We often take for granted that people are as they are named and don't register that they actually look very different when seen from different angles. Close up shots can also exaggerate bulk (think of all those giant cocks!). David was relatively short in stature so although he has a big physique for his size, he can look quite boyish when placed next to tall men (as in Bullies 3 above and 'Unapproved' here). Maybe other images will turn up one day to resolve this conundrum.

The only explanation I can offer regarding the uniform change in the story is that it's meant to represent a different occasion to the previous images, possibly after David returns from being on leave, for which he would have worn formal dress. A similar transition from gym to dress shorts also happens in 'Royale set 08, Unapproved' which also stars David Reid in a similar down-trodden role.

I speculate that the 'surprise' ending mentioned in Royale's description might have been that David had beefed himself up while on leave and on his return, still dressed up, he confronted the bullies, but in a sensational  mitchmen-style twist he ended up getting another beating! If this really is the story line, all photographed on the same day, it's even conceivable that they substituted a stand-in (uncredited) to provide extra beef for these 'surprise' images.

Royale Studio - BULLIES 5

Apart from the clean, crisp quality of these pictures and the familiar Royale feature of shapely bottoms in tight trousers, it's the caning of a big, fully grown man, and a serviceman at that, which makes these pictures so memorable. It's a humiliating, schoolboy punishment and he is having to be held down for it. That makes it seem all the more erotic of course.

Remarkably, the striker with the cane is not visible at all, just the tip of his cane. That glimpse conveys little sense of it's fearful power, despite the sailor's outrage on feeling it touch his bottom. This image is focussed on the offender's forced submission, his humiliation rather than the process of caning itself.

Royale Studio - BULLIES 6

This is a fairly typical image of the aftermath of a spanking. Whether it depicts real pain we can only guess (or hope), but it's a pretty good act at any rate! We get a good view of the punished sailor's pecs and chunky torso here. The bullied victim in Navy Gash, Percy, seemed to be a bit of a wimp, but this man is no weakling, no easy target.

In this picture the sailor's cap has been deliberately posed on the horse to imply he is a real serviceman. The name band appears to say HMS Gambia, which was a real cruiser in service with the Royal Navy until being scrapped in Dec 1960. (Spookily, that date follows not long after the issue of this Royale set in Apr 1959). The owner of this cap has laddishly crafted it into a beautiful curveIf you look back at Bullies 1 you will see what might be the same cap in the background.

The numbers in the corner of these pictures are simply a previous owner's reference numbers (see separate article - 'Royale Numbers & The Mystery Seller' - link pending). I have relied on the flow of the action for my numbering, but it is quite possible that BULLIES No.6 (332) should precede BULLIES Nos 4 and 5 (334, 333). That would imply there was another ass event of some sort immediately before the caning. I wish I had a picture of it!

Royale Studio - BULLIES 7

Maybe this is it, because this image and the next one, both showing the sumptuous, raised backside of a sailor draped over a cavalry saddle as though awaiting punishment, could also come from the Bullies set. His shorts, belt, and socks closely match David Reid's dress in the 3 pictures just above - as does his physique for that matter! The white gaiters seen in Bullies 4-6 are present too but partially obscured by ankle straps used to hold his legs apart (it's more obvious in Bullies 8 below).

I don't put much faith in the refence numbers on the pictures but this one (331) does happen to fit neatly in front of the other three (332-4) meaning someone else seems to have linked them too. It would be a plausible precursor to BULLIES-6 (332), but Royale transitions are not usually that abrupt.

Unfortunately there's no other crossover detail to link them into 'Bullies' more convincingly. Arguably there's a more convincing link to 'Royale set 08, Unapprovedin which David also wears these shorts and is beaten over the saddle too, except that it's placed on top of a table in that example.

One other caveat. Extreme close-ups like this are rare in (surviving) Royale pictures. I can't think of any off-hand in other storyettes, but some solo sets do have ass images like this. There is only one solo set I know of for David, called 'DAR' (see separate article on David Reid - link pending). The thumbnail image for DAR does include a military prop, the Royale drum. It's possible that these images may belong there.

Royale Studio - BULLIES 8

This picture is an obvious companion to Bullies 7, although it's numbered using a different system (see my article on Royale Numbers).

More interestingly the seam between David's legs is revealed to have a delicious worn area and possibly a split too. It adds a titillating emphasis to the parting of his balls in this unusually graphic picture.

Royale Studio 3 - "The Itch" (ARTICLE SUPERCEDED)

NOTICE
This article has now been superceded by separate, greatly enlarged and revised ones for
'Navy Romeo' and 'Navy Gash'

~

Some Royale Sailor subjects come under the heading of 'larking about' but even these had an edge in their day which might not be fully apparent to the modern reader.

'Oblivious Hunk' from 'The Itch'
'The Itch' shows a couple of sailors behind a screen, secretly watching a colleague dressing in his tight (of course!) navy whites, starting with underpants at half mast revealing his buttocks. The observers seem to get more and more excited as the dressing proceeds and even swop a kiss at one stage. The object of their attention seemingly proves his straightness by blowing a kiss at a photo of a film starlet. There are bottoms galore in this set and some nice pictures of (mostly unmodified) naval uniform worn by hunky men but it all seems a little tame on the surface.

In it's day, however, this set of pictures was charged with daring messages - openly gay servicemen, naked bottoms, clothed bottoms in suggestive positions - it was dangerous stuff. Plus of course the whole sequence could be viewed in reverse as an undressing scene, a most distasteful idea to Mr Average at that time.

In my sample picture, the positioning of the figures is quite satisfying although it looks totally artificial and comical. The arrangement of the mirror reflection is a nice touch but it's intended audience would not miss the glimpse of the pubic area. Fetch the smelling salts!

'Navy Gash' is less artful with a lazy sailor dragged from where he is dozing, drenched, scrubbed and finally stripped and labelled as gash (surplus, rubbish, not worth anything). It might pass as genuine representation of bullying/rough justice were it not for revealing trousers, the water poured down inside the front of the victims trousers and his exposed butt crack as his body is forcibly scrubbed with a brush. There is some excellent male and sailor imagery in this set but the picture quality suffers from an abundance of background detail which includes a motley collection of uniforms, some male pin-up pictures and an distinctly un-nautical bath!

You will see the reference to Sailor Al's collection on these pictures and you will find most of the rest of these series there although his site appears to be abandoned and most of the retrievable pictures suffer from ageing which has faded out subtle details like crotch creases in trousers which should be a major part of the pleasure for us.

Footnote: In Sailor Al's sequence for 'The Itch', which is not numbered on the actual images, the underpants disappear when the sailor begins to don his trousers which suggests that the first 3 underwear pictures should appear in reverse sequence, showing him removing them before re-dressing and 'going commando'.

Al says the sailors have laced his pants with itching powder forcing him to abandon them for his date, hence the celebrations.

Royale Studio 01a - Sailors in the Rigging (revised 20th Jul 2021)

Royale Studio in the 1950's was one of the first British producers of overtly gay erotica with a bias towards military themes and corporal punishment. The 1970's Guys In Uniform Studio (which I covered in a previous series of articles) covered very similar subject matter, they were quite separate enterprises but closely connected. For information on the personalities that made that connection, I refer you to the milism article by Squaddie John.

In this article I make some comments on the stylistic crossover.

Royale - Sailor Flogged In The Rigging

I'm going to start where I left off the GIU series, with images featuring sailors and rigging. This one is fairly well-known and the dramatic quality is striking. Compare it with Physique Pictorial imagery which was a contemporary. The technical quality is also surprisingly good.

The flogger here is Ron Wiltshire, I think. He has a striking face and build, and his bell bottom trousers add solidity to the forceful pose as well as enhancing his thighs. Those creases would earn him a punishment of his own in real life though! Royale reputedly made its models sit in a bath of cold water to wet their trousers so they would cling in sexy places like buttocks and thighs. You can also see the effect of cold water on the man at the right making a record of the punishment, since he clearly isn't wearing any underpants. I believe this might be Tom Harding, who we will see much of.

The anchoring effect of their bell-bottoms contrasts with the 'flying' pose of the victim. His rolled-up legs mark him as a 'worker', who would normally be scrubbing decks or climbing in the rigging, hence that nice, muscular back.  His legs are spread very wide creating an exaggerated sense of helplessness and stress and also helping those wet pants to highlight a delicious bubble butt. His leg pose matches the arrow-like shape of the soaring rigging ropes and there's a sense of upward thrust which finds erotic significance in the thick central rope which rises exactly in the middle between his thighs.

There's a theatrical quality to this staging, reflecting a highly creative mind at work.

Compare it now with the similar GIU image below (taken from my GIU set 9 review). You'll notice a gulf in impact and authenticity, however, the styling and sailor-flogging subject matter itself suggests there must be a close connection between these images. It looks like GIU are using the same rigging prop and the same combination of black belts and button-front, white trousers, both rolled-up. No wonder these studios are commonly confused with each other. The question becomes not what are the similarities between them, but rather how can you tell them apart?

Guys in Uniform - Sailors in the Rigging

One useful differentiator is the reference number or set ID which appears in the bottom corner of some Royale pictures inside square boxes (see below). These occasional numbers enable whole image groups to be firmly identified as Royale rather than GIU. They are there because in those days photographs were bought from a catalogue by mail order, not downloaded from the internet!

Royale Catalogue - Key List 8

Fortunately some of these catalogue pages are also available to us (above) and can help with set identification. This one has an image you probably recognise (middle row, far left) labelled 1-UNAP, whuch was short hand for 'Unapproved' (a suggestive play on the term 'Approved School' which was a UK euphemism for youth detention centres in the 1950's). There are 3 more UNAP's on the bottom line which you probably don't recognise but wish you did!

These pages also guide you to model identities (abbreviated in their labels, HEB = Henri Barjac). Being able to recognise models and place them in their correct era (Royale 50's, Guys In Uniform 70's) is probably the best differentiator of all

Royale - Nude Sailor Flogged In The Rigging

I used to think all Royale photos were in black and white, but the masters were coloured apparently and some coloured originals did surface recently (see below). This picture is a black and white one which has been subtly coloured and altered using Photo-shop type software. In general, coloured images are from GIU. There are nevertheless lots of black and white examples in my GIU series of posts, but they are reprints from 1970's magazines, which in those days always had limited colour content for cost reasons.

The photo-shopper of this variant has bestowed a more substantial backside on the victim and it's a result I imagine Royale would have approved of. The cropping here brings out a subtle, erotic feature of the original picture - the suggestive shaping of the flogger's free hand which seems to be reaching towards his captive's groin. Not accidental methinks, but an example of the art of 'hidden eroticism' (see label at foot of this post for links to more).

Royale - Sailors in the Rigging 1

This is another well known Royale composition which combines 2 different viewpoints. Put together they are both atmospheric and sensual. There's no illusion of this being a real ship or a real flogging but the close juxtaposition of two shapely, male bottoms is erotic and enticing.

Royale - Sailors in the Rigging 2

This image is a subtle variation of the last picture and the shift in far man's backside position is very sexy if they are viewed close together. The nearer man turns his backside towards us and they both bow their heads submissively in acknowledgement of the restraint and punishment scenario that unites them and, indeed, all these images.

As you can see above, GIU pictures featured nudes but Royale men usually remain clothed below the waist in accordance with the sanitised constraints of the times. Nude studies do appear in solo sets and there's a rear nude flash in Navy Gash, but I've never seen a frontal one. Even so, with trousers as tight as this a comparable effect to nudity is achieved and is arguably more erotic. The dramatic lighting exploits the black and white mode, it brings out the men's slender muscularity and curvaceous bottoms - compensating for the lack of bare flesh.

Royale - Sailors in the Rigging 3 coloured

Royale lovers were given a surprise present in 2019 when a small collection of coloured images, including the one above, surfaced in the Colville Exhibition. Apparently they were the photographer's masters, which were only sold on in black and white copies.

The far man's physique is a delight in colour, it makes you realise what treasures have been lost. The change doesn't enhance their bottoms very much which is some compensation. This slightly altered viewpoint makes the sexy, bottom-brushing effect even more pronounced.

Royale - Sailors in the Rigging 4 (Frontal)

The frontal variant is less daring but there's still plenty visible below the waist for the sharp-eyed. Exaggerated organs were left to artists like Tom of Finland in this era. This pose doesn't have quite the same sense of struggle and sexy vulnerability as the reverse views above. The models look as though they are relaxing rather than being restrained against their will. However, it does nicely showcase once again the physique of the far model. I haven't identified him yet but the boyish man on the left is Peter George.

Royale - Sailor Stripped for Flogging

There was another surprise with this image from the Colville exhibition. Forcible stripping is portrayed in some Royale 'sets' but not quite as vividly or near the knuckle as this. The colour finish and model's faces (which look familiar to me, Frank Lampard?) would have made me guess it to be by GIU, but apparently not. The victim's lack of underwear suggests there may even have been a nude sequel. That wouldn't be too surprising, plain envelope and under-the-counter explicitness was a feature of this market place and solo, nude, model studies have survived, but if frontal nude images formed part of Royale's storyettes they all seem to have been lost.

This picture seems to be thematically linked to the first image in this post but the models look different to me. The white gym shorts are also a difference, they are an accessory we haven't seen before but were a Royale staple and will return in other sets.

Guys in Uniform - 10 A sailor and a soldier (Corrected)

Postscript (September 2011)
It turns out I was completely wrong to attribute this picture to GIU
 - it's a genuine Royale picture, see Royale Article 17
But otherwise my observations stand.
 Sailor in shorts cornered

My final sailor picture (in this sequence) from GIU is a simple one but I think this is a little gem. The sailor has a nice build, an interesting facial expression and his clothes look right. And there's an interesting lump in his shorts too! It's not easy to make the RN cap look sexy, particularly when it's worn correctly but this picture does it. The foreground figure with his tight khaki shorts also looks sexy. The view between his legs as he stands with fists on his hips is artfully constructed to make the sailor look cornered and threatened.

This picture invokes the time when off-duty rivalry between the services was quite liable to erupt into brawls. Just one small flaw! The soldier's shapely legs appear to be bowing inwards, probably because his feet are turned out. It slightly detracts from the menacing stance but otherwise this is a perfect finale for the mitchmen review of the work of 'Guys In Uniform' Studio.

In the next post I will be looking at GIU's predecessor from the 1950's - Royale Studio.

Guys in Uniform - 9 Sailors in the rigging

Sailor dropping his pants

More sailor imagery featuring the tattooed man we saw in an earlier post as a soldier. The flap-front whites are perfect for erotic purposes and have been tightened up to create revealing contours. The bowed head of the matelot dropping his trousers (like an oriental genuflection) conveys not only submission but the possibility of a spanking too. GIU pictures often seem to be steering an erratic course between artful suggestion and overt sexual display. The bucket probably denotes a floor scrubbing punishment in the offing, which is of course a convincing explanation of why trouser removal is appropriate. Well, it might have been in those days!

A Flogging In The Rigging

I believe this picture is from a different series, but it has similar ingredients - tight clothes and indications of painful punishment. We have seen both the rope and rigging props before, we will see them again, in interesting circumstances.

Although the men and the scenarios are interesting erotically, the pictures in these sets somehow lack energy and bite. GIU pictures always looked posed, but as I have pointed out, there is often an artful eroticism which lifts them if you look harder. In this case, it's as though the naval setting did not inspire the muse of the photographer.

Part 10 of this series features a Royale Studio picture
that anticipates the classic trough-the-legs composition GIU used.
