Skinhead Shaving - Inspired by Jonathan

This picture was inspired by Jonathan's drawing 'Leatherdad-SF' posted yesterday.
It suggested to me a 'prequel' image in which the victim's backside was being lathered up with the shaving brush preparatory to the razor. This sketch is the result.

Mitchell - Skinhead, Skinhole

I have used the same general arrangement as the original but I haven't attempted to copy Jonathan's setting in detail - or his characters for that matter. In fact I decided to make them both skinheads which makes the shaving requirement rather ironic, hence the title - Skinhead Skinhole.

It isn't voluntary, the subs feet are securely tied to the basin taps to prevent escape whilst the gaping toilet gives him something else to think about! Naturally spanking will follow once his bottom has been returned to a hair-free condition.

Mitchell's A-Z of Fetish Art - Letter 'J' Summary

Well, what a cavalcade of talent the letter 'J' unearthed! These Artists represent several decades of erotic fetish art. The range of styles makes comparison well nigh impossible – we have the unrestrained enthusiasm of JF, Justin and Jayse, the impressive draughtsmanship of Jackal, the stylish cartoons of Jotto, the artistic technique of Tom Jones and Jame. In terms of subject matter we have seen the welcome depictions of older men by Joseph and Julius, the fascinating bondage scenarios of JoeT and JX and of course the iconic spanking images of Jonathan.

I usually pick a favourite but this selection is very hard to separate. In terms of pure artistry, Jackal would have to be the choice. His combination of superb drawing and semi-fantastical settings is, in a sense, the epitome of leather oriented fetish. For sensuality I would choose between Jotto's scarily fascinating 'Young Man in Peril' pictures and JF's bulky, rope-squeezed musclemen, who have a strange power to get my juices going! (Tom Jones' kisses are highly erotic but don't count as fetish). Story-telling is also important and in this department it's got to be JoeT or Jonathan with Jotto close behind. Any one of these artists would be worthy winners in a less crowded group.

However, if I have to choose I think it has to be Jonathan for his inventiveness, restrained sexuality and atmospheric settings.
Jonathan - Leatherdad SF
I've chosen the illustration to reflect some of my favourite themes which you might not associate with Jonathan – Leather, shaving and an very adult looking man being humiliated. As with all Jonathan's stuff, look at the detail. The position of the victim with his backside parked up against the cold enamel basin conjures up in my min
d an equally erotic, 'prequel' image of his hole being lathered up with the shaving brush preparatory to the razor. Nice!

Mitchell's A-Z of Fetish Artists - JX

JX is our final entry for the letter J. He draws men strapped up in rubber/leather suits and sometimes molested by handsome, muscular captors. We're back in the land of Boundex and JoeT here but there's a little more realism about the depictions.

JX - Fisting
JX actually shows the captors in the act of tying up the captive and interacting with him which is great. In 'Fisting', the attackers clothing has a sporting flavour about it. I like the relaxed pose of the fister.

JX - Blindfold+Gag

I'm not a big fan of masking faces but the combination gag and blindfold shows just enough facial detail to be erotic.

JX - Not Going Anywhere

These are just sketches and lined papersuggests he's not a 'pro' but there are some ambitious compositions here with interlocking bodies and limbs. They work well, overall the bodies look right and he has a talent for drawing rough masculine faces. There is a lot of authentic detail in the clothing and 'gear' although you have to look closely to make it out. It would be great to see more polished versions.

I have only a small group of sketches by this artist and no little about him. I'd certainly like to see more.

JX doesn't have a website as far as I know, but you will find examples in the GMBA archives (link in sidebar).

Mitchell's A-Z of Fetish Artists - Jotto

Jotto - Waiting
I am a fan of Jotto's work, although much of it is pretty gruesome fare. Muscular captives are subjected to brutal tortures and Jotto does not hold back from depicting bruising and trickling blood which isn't my cup of tea but fortunately the action doesn't always get that far.

Recurring themes are the victim tied to a chair, strangulation and electro-torture.

Jotto - Jungle Boy in The Eel Pit

Jotto is good at depicting electricity dancing over a victim's torso.
In this case it's the natural electrical discharge of an eel.

Jotto sometimes depicts fantasy scenarios like Alien abductions and Tarzan in captivity and this gives great opportunities for tentacle art and lab rat experiments. His 'regular' victims, however, often seem to be chosen simply for exhibiting their desirable bodies with excessively skimpy clothing. My own (Mitchell's) 'mitchmen' story lines are often even more arbitrary than this so I cannot criticise – but it's a disturbing thought process!

His men are heroically muscular and lean, every muscle and sinew is visible at times as they strain against their bonds. They have broad shoulders and very thick thighs but youthful slender waists. Jotto colours the body in a sensuous way with shading and highlights, but the musculature is so stringy and exaggerated that the end appearance is not really glamorous. Jotto's preference for longish floppy hair, however, gives the men some humanity and innocent appeal on which we can hang our sympathy in the ordeals they go through.

Jotto - Vincenzo Sleeping

His style resembles Comic Art with thick outlines and very black shadowing. This influence also shows in dramatic poses (as in the Tarzan picture above) with clenched fists and fore-shortened arms. 'Vincenzo sleeping' (immediately above) with it's dramatic shadowing and aerial viewpoint is a classic comic image. Latent menace oozes out of the picture.

Jotto - Eye of the Storm

Occasionally he publishes black and white pictures which resemble wood cuts.

Great, stylish fetish art which pushes the boundaries but is always sexy.

and his contribution to Snakes and Chains

I would have expected Jotto to have a blog somewhere but I haven't been able to find one.
He does collaborate with 'Kalabro' and there is some work pasted at Kalabro's blog

Post-script April 2011 - There is now a Jotto gallery at Telemachus site

Mitchell's A-Z of Fetish Artists - Justin

Justin - 'Forced Refreshment'
Justin's pictures are pure, unashamed sex. They depict enthusiastic, orgiastic excess with 3-5 participants arching, bending and twisting in balletic fashion to interlock their bodies while sending spurts of white and yellow liquids into the melee from impressive erections.

 Justin - Spanking

Somewhere in the picture one of the participants is restrained, being spanked or being forced to accommodate a sizable dildo but this is really just part of the general erotic scrummage.

Justin - Athletes Fisting

Which is not to say that they are merely decorative,
the tension on this nipple weight and the glazed expression speak for themselves

With so many bodies involved, a good deal of visual trickery is required to make them distinguishable from each other. Limbs and torso's have to be distorted into unlikely positions and lengthened in places and the laws of gravity are temporarily suspended to allow sensitive areas to connect. Justin pulls off this feat without totally abandoning anatomy, the resulting compositions are visually clear, almost believable but artistically balanced and satisfying too.
Justin - Untitled (showing Graeco-Roman nuances)

At times the style of the drawing and pastel colouring is reminiscent of naïve art from Greek or Roman times and he does sometimes use this historical theme. I suppose the intense, explicit orgiastic subject is as old as time itself. Whilst there is a certain arty 'craft' at work in these pictures they seem very authentic and truthful expressions of erotic feelings.

Justin has a blog at http://pencilmen.blogspot.com/ and you will find examples of his work in the GMBA archives (link in sidebar).

Mitchell's A-Z of Fetish Artists - Julius

Julius - Military Prisoner Tormented

Julius is a prolific artist and (like Tom Jones) he occasionally dips into fetish topics. His comic pictures are instantly recognisable – black and white with simple inked outlines. These are frames from stories so there is good use of clothing and background detail to add context and variety to the pictures. His straight forward technique enables him to bring out details like ropes which might be lost in a more 'photographic' style.

The bondage scene in the picture above seems almost incidental to the story he is telling, but it's representative of a steady undercurrent of cruel domination in his work, often interwoven with love and infatuation which is true S&M.
He often depicts sexual encounters with the characters standing and seen from the side – as in 'Military Prisoner' above. Julius demonstrates considerable skill in using line shading and occasional solid areas create a sense of depth and solidity which pretty much overcomes the absence of conventional signals of perspective like converging, receding lines. However the technique falters a little when angled perspective is required, as in 'Over the table' below.
Julius - Over The Table

Julius hardly ever shows characters in full length poses, even in the background (see top picture), usually preferring 'thigh upwards' close ups instead. This cinematic/photo technique adds intimacy and sexiness and the opportunity for sensual detail but in the picture above, the captive's body is little more than bare outlines with minimal detail or shading hinting at muscle shape. The treatment of the older man seems quite different. Julius is very good at showing older men as sexually attractive creatures. In this arena he probably has no equal, furnishing them with authentic stubble, strategic wrinkles and heavily muscled, often hairy, bodies. These features provide body shape signals that compensate for the absence of conventional shading but one is left with the impression that the mature man is the main focus of the artist's interest.

Julius - Groping

This picture is drawn in an attractive, softer style and the detailing of the clothing is nicely done. It highlights just how little use Julius normally makes of body shading in his comic pages. Younger characters abound in Julius' art as he pursues his cross-generational agenda. They usually have rounded chins and snub noses creating a pleasant puppy-fat appearance. However they are rarely depicted in so much detail as the young man in 'Groping' above, the minimal technique seen in the preceding image is more common. Frequently they are relegated to the edges and corners of the frames from where they worship their elders and betters. Even in this image, it's the older man who has the more interesting and characterful, smoother Latin look.

 Julius - Glominius Files II

When Julius chooses to show man on man interactions the resulting images can be pretty impressive. However, he conjures up some pretty, bleak worlds where might is right. Fleeting scenes like this form a background commentary of continual threat and danger, constantly threatening to engulf the more innocent souls who pass through. It's a traditional embellishment to hero-in-danger stories but in Julius' hands masculinity oozes out out the image (in more ways than one) merging the physical threat with the sexual.

Julius - Flogging the Tormentor (from Ramon and Julian)

Thankfully, the bad guys sometimes get their come-uppance, Julius captures this ones horror at the role reversal, although the punishment doesn't seem to have impaired his libido. Interestingly, Julius chooses to show the slave administering the revenge flogging without referencing the colour of his skin. In pictorial terms he too takes second place to the hairy, mature villain. This may be a way of circumventing racial taboos, but this is 1997 and Julius doesn't shrink from using clothing indicative of race in other stories. It's almost as though the artist doesn't really acknowledge the identity of the younger people in his pictures, which is surprising and slightly disturbing.

The use of angled perspective here is more successful than my previous example but Julius is hampered from fully expressing the drama of the scene by his own preference for close-ups and the need to conform to the 'portrait' page orientation, to match the rest of the story. As a result the scene looks rather cramped and the drama of the sweep of the lash is considerably muted.

Julius - Punishing a Rustler (from Ramon and Julian)

Where Julius employs male bondage in his stories he gives it a context which enriches the appeal of the images and stokes the imagination, compensating for the relative lack of sensuality in the style. Frustratingly they are often stand-alone scenes, there is no tantalising precursor of capture and stripping to whet the appetite for this climax. This scene is just as crowded as the one above but Julius' preferred sideways viewpoint is more successful. By drawing back a little he is able to incorporate some extra background detail which also enhances the scene.

Julius - Vikings II

Abductions are part and parcel of the Julius experience, inevitable in a story about Vikings I suppose, but examples involving an adult males are less usual. Although it's a bit 'posed',  I quite like this depiction of the cornered captive who's been secured with some attractive rope work. Note the hair colours - Vikings are blond!
Julius - Marine

From my point of view, one of the most important contributions Julius has made to erotic art (and it is borderline fetish) is in his depictions of uniforms and clothing in general. His comic pages are positively stuffed with these, all depicted in remarkable variety and detail and it's clearly an area of great interest to him. This single example scarcely does justice to his capabilities in this field (and I may revisit this aspect of his work).

Unfortunately the 'favourite faces' and recurring close-up poses do become a little repetitive over time. Which is not decry the individual pictures which are mostly very sexy with attractive looking chunky men. His excursions into fetish subjects – abductions, spanking and rope bondage – are important ingredients in his stories but he doesn't delve deeply into the subject. In that sense he is not truly a fetish artist but some of these pictures are quite memorable and rank alongside the 'specialists'.

Julius - Pole-tied

My final example is perhaps a taste of what might have been. This image had been rattling around my collection for years seeking it's proper attribution until I finally spotted that the faded signature was that of Julius with his trademark two digit date appended. I would never have guessed him as it's creator from the subject matter or the style. It's 3-dimensional technique and convincing depiction of  genuine restraint shows an interest and commitment to bondage that is far from evident in other work like that shown above.

I don't know if Julius is still active,
his own website at 'Julius Toons' is gone now but a search engine will throw up lots.
There's a good selection at Daddy's Here

A mention of Josman

Josman - Portrait

Josman is a highly accomplished artist and in my book his craggy portrayals of mid-life male faces are probably the best around.

Josman - Nightcharm (Detail)

Although he occasionally portrays leather-clad men in his stories it isn't in a fetish context so I don't intend to cover him in the A-Z but I can't resist including a sample because his artwork is so good.
