DJ Beckham - Sexy Wrestler in Trouble

It didn't take long for the other wrestlers to show their displeasure at some of DJ's antics. Mark O took him on one side and calmly explained to him that throttling with a wristband was not how things were done in this locker room.

I believe Beckham's response was: 'Are you kidding me?'

Mark decided that actions might speak louder than words
and drew DJ's attention to his own vulnerabilities.

This exchange was overheard by another pro, Guido Genatto. One of the most feared grapplers on the circuit. It's not recorded what Beckham said to him, but he got a short and sharp response.
(Embarrassing hold, but his shoulders and trunks looked great)

If Beckham had a flair for embarrassing opponents with simple holds (see Part 1), Guido was the master of economical domination.

He was pretty good at hurting his opponents, too.

The lesson was not short and sharp,
it lasted long into the evening.

You can imagine how Beckham felt when he discovered his next contest in the ring was against Genatto AND Max Quivers, whose sheer size and spooky appearance would intimidate anyone. Before long, they were stretching DJ's resources.
(His hair was ruined, but at least his trunks looked good)

Guido's holds in the ring were more severe than in the Locker Room.

In his turn, Quivers turned Beckham's own locker room fouls against him, wrapping a belt round his neck.

It got pretty rough on the ropes after that.
(probably jealousy at Beckham's fantastic abs!)

Inevitably, they teamed up against him on the mat too.
Here, in a muscle wrenching, double-ender strike.

With his back softened up, DJ was helplessly suspended
in a teardrop hold - painful as well as humiliating.
But Genatto lecturing him at the same time was just too much.

Predictably, other wrestlers on the circuit took advantage.
Caleb Klein had his own bad memory to erase.
He put DJ into the same embarrassing hold.

The icing on top of his revenge
was to engulf Becks face with a sweaty armpit.
(possibly unwashed)

Against the formidable Joey Nux, Beckham courageously piled in,
clad in uncharacteristic, white trunks, as if wanting to remind the fans that he'd got one of the best asses in the business.

Perhaps forgetting that the last time he'd worn light trunks,
he'd had a double drubbing from Genatto and Quivers.

Nux gave him a taste of his own favourite corner pin

A comprehensive course in the art of heel.

Joey's grandstanding was wasted on poor Becks,
preoccupied with a gag of murky, warm, pit sweat.
It was probably unnecessary anyway.
He'd already made his point.

We saw how DJ's spirited attacks were blunted by Wes Ratchet's immovable wall in Part 1. When he took control, DJ was in trouble!
Soon the sweat flowed as freely as the pain in his shoulders.

Thus weakened, another assault on Beckham's back soon developed.
A fine display of domination, with DJ left gasping.

Another taste of wrestler's heel keeps a good man down.

Against lightweight, Max Ryder, Becks dons his tastiest briefs yet.
But he won't have wanted to show them off
while trapped in a head-scissors hold.
Beck's days of weighty domination seemed to have ended.

Zack Reno is no mean wrestler, but he's not a heavyweight,
so he's not supposed to be able to do this!
Beck's in despair, but still able to show us his sexy side.

Thanks to them all for looking great!

DJ Beckham - Sexy Wrestler 1

I don't know if this is a particularly good wrestling move, but the whole image is oozing with man appeal, bursting with physical exertion. The hunk putting on the pressure is DJ Beckham, during his spell of wrestling under the Wrestler4Hire banner. In this contest he gives pretty boy, Travis Maverick, a bit of a run around.

Here he gives Gabe Steele a taste of heel, simultaneously showing us that there is more to his man appeal than just sweaty flesh.
Gabe is usually a more serious and accomplished performer than his outfit here implies.

DJ presses his attack home, driving Gabe into the corner. If this was a Royale Studio image, I'd be commenting on the juxtaposition of Beckham's ass and Gabe's tented crotch.

Travis ended up in the corner too, with DJ's foot embedded in his solar plexus. The straining in his flimsy, white briefs suggests it may be just as well that DJ is keeping his ass at a distance this time. Sadly, his black trunks are less expressive than his opponents.

Beckham's tactics are called out just when it's getting interesting. Like a true heel, he protests his innocence. He wants to go on.

Travis' face tells a very different story!

Beckhams illegal use of the ropes in these examples might alert you to a sadistic streak in him. Mark O ran foul of it too in this locker room encounter. It's clear that DJ is never slow to use his physical strength, here he shamelessly improvises with a wrist sweatband, to devastating effect.

Beckhams weight keeps the muscular physique of Igor pinned beneath his knee in this outdoor contest. He increases the pressure on Igor's back with a semi-Boston style, leg lever. Igor's shoulders look great, but are of no help to him.

From the side, we see some nice shaping of Igor's briefs,
and a suggestive interlocking of crotches.
Beckham looks as if he really means business.

Igor struggles in a body scissors and arm lock combo.
But his wrestling trunks suggest he's enjoying it
I'm not sure about DJ though, he looks disappointed.

Caleb Klein is made of sterner stuff, but with Beckham's weight pinning him down, simple arm blocking and a neck hold become an effective restraint.

Beckham uses a similar entanglement technique
to tie Cash up in embarrassing knots

This hold produces some good visuals for us.
But leaves strong man Cash, frustrated and angry.

Even the nimbleness of Max Ryder is frustrated.
He ends up face down on the mat, displaying his buns.

Zack Reno ends up staring down the mouth of a cannon.
DJ doesn't know quite how to deal with this situation.
Perhaps insist on less flimsy trunks next time, DJ.

It would be a terrible shame to lose this sight, though.
DJ goes for the heel's preferred form of hero worship.
But it's all too much for Zack.

But it wasn't always like this for DJ Beckham....

Against the formidable Wes Ratchet,
he strains and he sweats deliciously,
but it doesn't seem to produce much of a result.

Art by David Angelo 1

The vintage gay art of the sixties that was printed in beefcake magazines of the time often seems quite amateurish, however this example by David Angelo has a pleasing blend of technical accuracy and sensuality.

Inevitably, the model is clad in a posing pouch, a garment that often attracts derision in our own time, but the artist's treatment gives us a sense of size inside and entrapment, a straining to escape that shows us how the men of the time really saw it. Something truly erotic.

More on vintage pouches

Angelo's drawing is based on a photograph of course, the model's physique and face looks rather like the great Rick Wayne.

David Angelo - Gunslinger

Cowboys were big in popular culture in the sixties, replete with handsome heroes. Angelo has given this one another idealised treatment, with prominent pecs and nipples straining at his tight shirt. The gun belt fulfils a similar restraining role below the waist. This last detail was not pure invention....

David Angelo - Wrestlers

For this image of two wrestlers, Angelo has cleverly used the same stark lighting to cover up a bold erotic statement.

One of the fighters is caught in a position where he's off-balance and vulnerable. His flimsy pouch inevitably draws the eye, but it's also attracted his opponent's hand. It's groping underneath, in the shadow of his groin. This hold has nothing to do with wrestling!

In addition, the fighter in the foreground is totally naked, and the dark shadow that hides his far leg accentuates the impression that he's presenting his backside to us.

It's not simply the sexuality that is so daring, it's the homosexuality. In 1960, just putting men together in a picture was suspect.

The lattice pattern in the corner is not part of Angelo's picture, it's part of an adjacent image in a magazine spread

David Angelo - Pop Star's Finale

In 1963 when this picture was published, pop music was starting to shed its veneer of respectability with Beatlemania converting music concerts into manic, adoration events. With its focus on young love, however, it was (and still is) relentlessly heterosexual. Not many pop stars dressed in transparent shirts and matador pants like this (not yet).

Nevertheless, many gay artists tried to incorporate pop into their images. Tom of Finland's 'Ringo' openly sought to subvert the idea of straight entertainers and I suspect Angelo is doing that here too, by showing us his rear view, tensed above opened legs, raised up on tip toes. The singer seems to be ignoring his female fans, who are noisily lusting after his front profile. He's casting aside, too, the female shape of his guitar*. "Come and get me", he seems to be saying. To us, not them.

Ultimately these images fail to capture the magical attraction of pop stars, because away from the mic', he's just another bloke. I think I have seen art images of a star being seduced on stage, but I can't cite it at present. Sex in front of a horde of screaming women is a bit niche for me!

*The singer's own shape has interesting undulations at waist level, with an odd fit into his pants at the left. It's almost as if Angelo couldn't quite decide how slim, how masculine to make him look.

Angelo - Slave Auction

Ever since Victorian times, the Slave Auction has been a 'go to' for artists seeking to portray gender power play and sexploitation in a semirespectable way. It fitted readily into the adoption of classical settings by gay artists seeking to avoid censure in the 50s and 60s.

Angelo's Romanesque take has a very unusual night setting, giving him an opportunity to play with light effects*. The physiques of the two spectacularly muscular men who are manacled and up for sale, are greatly flattered by it - to the benefit of their value too, I suppose.

A key ingredient in this scenario is the depiction of the slaves' emotions. One is proudly displaying himself, seemingly indifferent to the fate which might await him. His companion is, if anything, more muscular, but seems to be cast as a younger servant. He reaches forward, holding up the cloth which screens their groins (for the time being).

The bidders we can see in the audience seem to have their own favourites, suggesting these two will not remain united after the sale.

*Angelo seems to have achieved this night effect using chalk or crayon on black paper. It gives something of an etched effect. Some of the detailing is spectacular - the creases of the toga for example. Unfortunately, his characterisation of the second slave, using voluminous hair and rounded cherub cheeks is very much of it's time and doesn't work for us, even if we believed in such improbable muscularity to go with it. With a man's head and face, the whole image would work much better.

The Many Faces of James Seely

Last year I posted a series of articles showcasing the vintage model, James Seely (or Selig)
His spontaneous facial expressions in the pictures I found fascinated me as much as his sex appeal.
So much so that I couldn't resist playing with the imagery.

James Seely and Dave Hodge (AMG)

This is his look of 'I can't believe he just said that'
Dave's is the look of 'why do I have to break them all in?'

James Seely and Dave Hodge (AMG)

The AI-cartooniser brings out an extra dimension to both men's physiques
that's not so obvious in the original photograph - two very shapely bottoms
with James's being definitely the bubbliest of the two.

James Seely and Dave Hodge (AMG)

Actually James doesn't look very worried, just a bit defensive.

James Seely and Dave Hodge (AMG)

James is a big boy and seems a lot of fun, so you can't blame Dave for trying!
His expression here seems rather like 'I don't want to think about that sort of stuff'.

Meanwhile, back at the motorbike......
