Art by Leo-Art

Leo-Art - Captured Barbarian

 The inhabitants of a remote jungle village have been taken prisoner by the military. One by one they are restrained and interrogated. 

This X-spread is a favourite Leo-Art meme.
The dangling ball is a very clever visual device, concealed but revealing. There's a better example later in this post 

 

Leo-Art - Fighters Club

Two hunky men present themselves for naked inspection in a glamorous bar. They are confronted by an angry man who clearly has considerable control over them. One looks at his companion as if what they are being told they have to do is not what he expected. 
But there's no backing out now. 
 
 
Leo-Art - Dean Milked
 
In this Sci-Fi scenario, 'Dean' finds himself in an equally irreversible situation. Captured by a humanoid alien and suspended in an uncomfortable, reverse bondage he is induced to provide milk for them (a process which greatly interests aliens for some obscure reason). In fact, they seem to expect him to produce a considerable amount of milk. The glowing collar may be providing encouragement, but this may take some time. Hang on Dean!
 
 
Leo-Art - Devil's Castle 1

 In this picture, two adventurers, have been captured by a devil whose wickedness proved to be more than a match for their young confidence. Stripped of his arms and shackled in a cangue (a sort of portable pillory), the cute one is forced to watch his comrade being humiliated. No doubt his turn will come soon enough.
 
You'll notice that this artist has a considerable predilection for rear views.

Leo-Art - Beach Fight

A beach bully gets his comeuppance - at least, that's the interpretation if you believe that blonds are innately innocent and good. I prefer to believe that this is a beach bully doing his worst on a hunky, innocent bather whose Speedos were grabbing all the attention on the beach. 
 
Wrestling scenarios are quite hard to do most mediums, the close interactions and unusual body contortions are a challenge to reproduce and even in photographs it's hard to capture clearly what is actually going on in the tangle without losing the sense of genuine struggle. This image is quite an achievement on that level alone, but it is also a terrific drama, showing power, domination and subjugation. 
  
 
Leo-Art - Warriors

As promised, another dangling ball whose bauble-like appearance belies its fiendish purpose (which I hope I don't have to explain). This render is not as pretty or technically skilled as No 1, but the bauble is more convincingly hung. The different viewing angle is also surprisingly sexy, its effect heightened by some clever close cropping. Obviously the clarification of the frontal threat helps too! 
 

Leo-Art - Greenskin's Dungeon

This scenario, with captives turned into beasts to pull their master's wagon is a popular scenario in art and gay photography (see examples below). Leo-Art's take is slightly comic but has great energy and excitement which picks up the drama of the chariot races and stagecoach chases in movies of yore. The slaves must be asking themselves if this contraption has any brakes.
  
In other versions of this scenario, the slaves usually they use their hands to pull the cart or carriage (as in Pony boys by M.Carcel and AMG Pony Whip), Roa used a chest push in Jim's Pony Duty, Etienne used a waist belt to harness his enslaved sailors to a plough, but here another cargue/pillory device serves as a halter, so the boys have to use their shoulders. The desert setting reminds me irresistibly of Chirenon's Captured Airmen, visualising this as their ultimate fate.

I thought it prudent to censor this one, the original was already spoiled by Japanese-style zig-zags.

 

Leo-Art - Varane - Whip

If you like your men well hung, Leo-Art's your man. 

Varane is one of his characters, the olive green loin cloth suggestive of a military man. Leo always shows the feet pointing down which adds to the stretching effect.

 

Leo-Art - Glory Hole 1

This image and the next show that Leo is equally imaginative with more down-to-earth interactions between men. You'd think this has been done dozens of times, but I'm struggling to think of a memorable example. The interaction between the two 'users' adds something extra to the narrative, as if this is a club with different layers of membership. No prizes for guessing who's got Premier.

Renders provided the first ability to automatically change the viewpoint of the imagery and often resulted in an oversupply where the artist was unable or unwilling to choose the best. That's gone into overdrive with AI, but I thought this variant was worth including as it shows us the faces of the two men and with it a clearer narrative. 
 
 
Leo-Art - Foot Fetish

It's quite unusual to find an artist who embraces the fetish of the foot quite as enthusiastically as this. Even Etienne treated supplicants as respectful samplers of a rare delicacy. The pointing finger of the master seems quite unnecessary in this case, which diminishes the kick he gets out of it himself - unless he likes to ration his sub. 
 
From the artist's point of view, the demands of picturing a foot in this situation are also diminished, most of it is hidden. That may explain Etienne's approach, he simply loved drawing feet.
 
 
Leo-Art - Brian the Soldier

This unusual close-up of the abdomen of a man firing a rifle speaks for itself in both artistic and erotic terms. Renderers often surround their subjects with vast, empty spaces which drains the erotic value. Leo-Art is much more attuned to the art of selective cropping. 
Very nice.

Leo-Art works closely with BrosFate and their styles are similar, but I'm surprised to find I have only posted Leo-Art's work at mitchmen once before: Another Whipping back in 2021

Milism reprint


A reprint of the 'long-lost', 2002, Milism article about Royale Studio by Squaddie John has been added to the mitchmen, Royale Studio blog. 
 
It's a review of Royale's modus operandi slightly jumbled up with references to 'Guys in Uniform'. The narrative is somewhat biased towards spanking but also has useful comments about the UK political and social environment in the 50s and 60s, particularly in relation to members of the armed forces. There's also an interesting postscript about the origins of the so-called British Photographers' collection which was responsible for most of the best quality images we have today (like the one above).
 
I have had to restore the illustrations for the article, drawing on title information and my memory of the site, but there are one or two I'm unsure of, so I'm putting out an appeal to any Royale enthusiast who remembers the original article at Milism, to check my reprint and see if they can help with picture identities.

Guys in Uniform - 1 - Double Discipline (Part 'B')

Guys In Uniform - Double Discipline B01

The two men under punishment have now put on snug-fitting singlets (or vests) with impersonal numbers on the back. The Instructor has ordered them to lie down, leaving their shorts still lowered, so that their backsides are visible. It's the horizontal equivalent of facing the wall, a psychological rebuke, expressing rejection and isolation. The punisher has put away his cane, but I imagine his tongue can sting these men almost as well.

This photo has a curious composition, with the protagonists confined to the boundaries and a vast empty space filling most of the picture (which I have filled with logos out of desperation!) It is taken from a magazine, part of a montage in which another, overlapping image filled much of that space, see below. The combination of upright and prone figures in a picture is a challenge for any photographer, as Royale Studios also found. However, it seems surprising that the photos seem to have been taken with that marketing scheme in mind. The original photo may amount to more than this, of course, and not be so awkwardly cropped.

In the second picture the men have changed out of their shorts altogether, leaving them crumpled at the feet of No 4.  No 3's singlet is very close-fitting, he continues to be the more striking of the pair.

The second stool, last seen in image A03 has been reintroduced.

The two men are ordered to sit on the stools. The corded seats quickly bring new discomfort to their just-caned bottoms. The instructor stands watching them with hands on hip, as if waiting for something. They just hang their heads. Their overhanging bottoms make a strikingly original, teasing image. As if in response, there's a rare sighting of the front of the instructor's shorts, which do not suggest he's totally disappointed with them.
 
Once again, the editor's cropping seems overdone on the right, resulting in another, oddly unbalanced composition. 

 
Guys In Uniform - Double Discipline B04

This unconventional scenario, now takes a new turn. 
It appears No 3 has been detained, kept in after school, as it were.
He slumps on the floor, minus his training shoes, a sign that he's not going anywhere soon. The instructor has also taken off his shorts, as if they are now equals. It hints at a steamy closing ceremony, involving more sacrifice by No 3.
 
In Britain there used to be light-hearted debate about whether, milk should be added to the cup before or after pouring tea. There seems to a similar divide about sex and spanking. And yes, I know that many prefer their spanking without any sex at all.
 
There's another (unavoidable) blank corner here. They all fit together very well in 'Uniform Magazine' spread (shown below). But it's hard to imagine this was all intentional. The uncluttered backgrounds don't help.

Guys In Uniform - Double Discipline B05

 In this picture, it seems that the tables have been turned on the sadistic instructor. Bereft of his shorts (just visible on the floor with the distinctive, black waist band), he rests his forearms on a stand rather like a butchers block, with a padded top set at an ideal height for bending over. A cane stands propped against the side, ready for the arrival of another dispenser of rough justice.
 
Maybe picture B04 is actually showing the waiting room, with both men in line for a painful reprimand, perhaps having been caught having sex after spanking. Maybe this set be named 'Triple Discipline'!
 
 
Guys In Uniform - Double Discipline B06

In this picture we see the instructor slumped on the floor, looking distinctly down in the mouth, if not in other departments. I have sequenced these images to suit my own narrative, since no thumbnail sheets are known for Guys in Uniform sets. I imagined this as the aftermath of the Instructor's supposed comeuppance. Equally, it could be him, still awaiting his turn, after No 3 was summoned in to the Punishment Room.

There is a further image that doesn't seem to be part of this set, but also features the distinctive vest with coloured hoops.
 
Guys In Uniform -Athlete with Cane
 
This is not obviously the man wearing the hooped vest in the preceding pictures, but his predicament complements my narrative there perfectly. He's strapped to the four corners of a board or box in a way that prevents escape but not all movement. A cane leans against his bottom, an unsubtle clue to the reason for his restraint.
 
He's wearing shorts, which have been hitched-up to provide an open target area. His gym socks have been removed and dropped at his feet to one side. 
 
He's also wearing an incongruous, broad leather belt-cum-corset, with multiple straps at the back. Probably put on him by the men who restrained him. This fetish garment features in many Guys In Uniform sets with leather/rubber themes, but this cross-over picture is usual. It suggests the meeting of two worlds - wholesome athletic activity and dark, secret fetish. 
 
This is an initiation, perhaps or a peeping Tom about to be taught the error of his ways. His expression suggests that he's realised from the restraints and the tightness of his strange garment that this warning is going to be very different to anything he has experienced before.

Guys in Uniform 1 - Double Discipline (Part 'A')

Guys In Uniform - Double Discipline A01

Above: An atmospheric staging of a disciplinary session at a military establishment. The two offenders hang their heads, deferring to the punisher's authority and anxious not to aggravate him.

There is a colour variant of this image which reveals that the man in authority here has removed his shorts, they lie on the floor at the back. Apart from that incongruous detail, it seems a logical first image in continuity terms. Like most of 'Guys in Uniform' output, this set doesn't have a discernible storyline.

Guys In Uniform - Double Discipline A02

The two men 'assume the position' under the watchful eye of their nemesis, who is properly dressed now, but seems in no hurry to start.
 
The images in this article come from a 'Guys in Uniform' set which I have called 'Double Discipline'. It is probably the best known example of their work - with good reason! The situation of two men in PT kit, up for punishment with a cane, is memorable. You are immediately struck by the tight and very brief, white shorts, which visually are an advance on the efforts of Royale Studio. Of course, Guys in Uniform had the option of using flimsier garments than Royale did in the 50s. 
 
Royale's black and white images of men in shorts were bedevilled by 'white-out' of shorts under the glare of bright lights, erasing the details. The wider availability of colour 20 years later solved that problem, although the bending figure on the left above is a near miss. The pants are lit to show off the target areas very well, and the glimpse of bulges between the legs is amazing. The hems of their shorts show off chunky thighs, while the ankle socks with blue hoops (also classic sports wear in their day) reveal solid calves - these men are fit!

The Offender who is first up lowers his shorts and the ritual begins.
The blond-haired man wielding the cane here is not entirely convincing as a military disciplinarian, but I suppose we might regard him as an 'Instructor'.  His skimpy shorts have a thick black waistband rather like those worn by professional boxers. In fact, there's a striking resemblance to a pair of shorts worn by a hunk, who graced the front cover of Zipper 45 a few years later, in 1984 (below).

Sadly, this man didn't appear anywhere else as far as I know, and the shorts fashion didn't catch on for official contests.  
 
There's a break in continuity in the images we have at this point. You'd expect another picture very similar to No 3, but showing the 2nd offender taking his turn to be caned, a classic 'double'. He does indeed get his lot in the next image, but much else has happened in the meantime...

In image 4, the first offender has been dispatched to stand facing the wall and his hands have been tied behind his back, suggesting a rebellion might have quelled. His shorts are in a higher position, a concession, perhaps, to allow him to shuffle with dignity. Or perhaps his unsuccessful attempt to 'cover up' was responsible for his wrists being restrained. The Instructor is not yet finished with him, but his raised head suggests he remains defiant.
 
One of the two stools has now disappeared. The remaining man lowers his shorts and takes his turn alone.

The indentation visible here shows the instructor means business.  No 2's filthy shoes won't have gone down well with him, and might have earned him something extra. (However, they afford us a convenient way of distinguishing the two men, in the absence of visible faces). 
 
His colleague at the wall dips his head, as if acknowledging his comrade's treatment, but whether in sympathy or sudden dismay on his own account is impossible to say.

Having completed his allocation of strokes, 'mister dirty shoes' takes his turn at the wall. His shorts are now down round his ankles. We can only speculate how that came about, but he seems to have decided it prudent to leave them there, so we get to appreciate his chunky backside. 
 
He seems to be standing protectively over a glass of water that appeared in some of the earlier pictures. Finding the session too hot? Well, you might detect a rosy hue to his cheeks, but this studio didn't go beyond mild simulation. No doubt, though, there must have been some playful taking advantage of the situation. Purely in the interests of authenticity, of course.  
 
No 1 is recalled for a second dose, and his kneeling position here suggests he's still not being co-operative. You can see the front of the Instructor's shorts quite clearly here with the badge in the waistband, not to mention a telling bulge underneath. He has a number of tattoos on his arm, which spelt 'rough and butch' in those days. That bodes ill for the rebel.

You sense a certain extra energy and determination here, as the Instructor resumes his thankless task of correction. His swing is hampered, though, which won't improve his temper.
 
My eye is drawn back to the man facing the wall, he has a beautiful figure and an upright posture (a cross between at attention and at ease) that is very manly. There's a treat for neck freaks, like me (despite a near 'white-out'). 
 

There's a significant jump in continuity in the remaining images in this series. The two men being punished discard their shorts and put on figure-hugging singlets/vests instead. We don't see the men changing, just the end result. There seems no rational explanation for such a switch, except perhaps to increase the humiliation factor. There are other discontinuities too, so I have therefore separated this group into a separate post -

Stephen's 'Golden Pasha'

 Stephen's 'Golden Pasha' dates from the nineteen sixties. It appears to be related in concept to, and a precursor to, the better known 'Sailors Beware' story, which came out in its first version shortly after 'Pasha', judging by the Kris Catalogue numbering.

The Kris Catalogue entry for 'Pasha' (replicated above) showed 6 images, with all the characters in them respectably 'draped'. Three of them were also published in a larger format in a different catalogue. This article features an uncensored version which I found on the Tim In Vermont website before it was taken down. It didn't give any source information. 

 The three 'big' earlier images are included in the article below in the appropriate places. Unlike the revised version of 'Sailor Beware', the underlying images don't seem to have been significantly altered other than replacing the loin-cloths and pouches with not quite erect organs. No sex is shown.  

 

Stephen's 'Golden Pasha' 1
 
The Golden Pasha lounges in luxury while around him a harem of conspicuously naked, young men entertain him with music, grovel and pamper him. Notice the phallic uprights of his throne.
 
Stephen was quite fond of depicting musicians at this time. I suppose there's a certain innuendo in the horn blowing and string plucking of long-necked instruments.
 
 
Stephen's 'Golden Pasha' 1 (original version)

This earlier version shows all the characters in exactly the same positions. The three on the right have acquired pouches which seem to be carefully detailed with patterns (and jewels in the Pasha's case). The covering of the guard at the doorway, however, seems to have been painted on rather clumsily by comparison. The Pasha's pantaloons have also been altered, extending all the way up to his waist rather than finishing high up on the thigh, like stockings.

The Pasha seems to be a hard master to serve. In the dungeon below, those who displease him are chained up, and he personally punishes each of them with his whip. His suspender belt is meticulously detailed and impressively jewelled. It's apparent that the 'Golden' tag relates to his wealth, not his sunny personality.

The Pasha's maltreatment of his slaves means he must watch them with an eagle eye for any signs of rebellion. But one slave at least has had enough. He has somehow procured a sleeping potion and secretly drugs the Pasha's wine. 

This picture almost seems to shift the scene to Japan, as witness the bonsai-like trees. The intricate decoration of the pillar on the left which includes a Fuji-like mountain, a stylised chrysanthemum and more typically Japanese style patterns in-between (plus an incongruous elephant, which is neither Arabian nor Japanese).

Some of Steve Masters' images around this time featured decorative detail like this. 

 

Stephen's 'Golden Pasha' 3 (original version)

This earlier version is little different. Again, the Pasha's pants have become thigh-wraps and his dick is covered by a jock-like, ribbed pouch (with a jewel encrusted top hem!). We can see more of the foreground, bottom left, which turns out to be a pool with fish and lilies. A show of his opulence.

 

Stephen's 'Golden Pasha' 4

Once the Pasha has fallen into a drugged sleep, his slaves rise up against him. Some have weapons, perhaps taken from the Palace Guards who seem to have deserted their master. Someone, at some point, has removed his pants and boots. As a result, the Pasha lies in a tempting, splayed legs position*. One of the rebels seems to be inviting everyone to have a go. 

*This is a favourite pose of Stephen's, it seems to turn up in many stories, twice in Night Patrol, in image 5 and image 8. The Pasha version is more convincing than some.

The Pasha awakes to find a knife menacing his chest and his treasure chest being looted. Perhaps more startlingly for him, his legs are in physical contact with the intimate regions of two of his slaves. One is resting between the buns of the looter. The other is raised between the legs of his immediate attacker, almost as if they had just had intercourse. Who knows? The threat of the knife seems to be equated with the threat of his dick. A choice to be made?

In the original version of image 5, pouches have sprouted once again, to conceal the less offensive weapons of the attackers.  The disappearance of the primary attacker's dick makes his knife seem a lot more menacing, although he's still deliberately angling it out from his groin. 

 The Pasha's modesty is protected by a casually draped cloth, looking a bit like leopard skin. Oddly enough, that device makes his nudity and vulnerability seem more apparent. His hairy legs, glimpsed in earlier pictures, come to the fore.

 All the slaves' faces have been upgraded in the nude version, in line with Stephen's later technique. In the original, we can see more of the architectural detail of the room, which adds greatly to the depth of the image. We can also see some subtle shading in the trees, which is probably washed out in the later version by the reproduction process.

In the final image, the Pasha himself is chained like a slave and forced to kneel, cringing in submission to his former slaves. He is stripped of his turban, the symbol of his rank, as well as the last vestiges of his clothing (except for one sock). He looks very naked now, and the raised position of his hands, behind his back, suggests he's desperately trying to free himself. Aware perhaps that he will soon make his first acquaintance with the business end of his own, vengeful whip in the dungeon. 
 
This is an interesting study of feet, which are less evident in the earlier pictures, but soon became Stephen's unique trademark. Perhaps the Pasha is being invited to address them with respectful lips. Their exaggerated size here creates a sense of powerful men and menace surrounding the cowed ruler. 
 
The intertwining of the feet with Stephen's signature seems to be deliberate, but it's unclear why, perhaps indicative of his personal fascination with them. I'm afraid it reminds me of sticky carpets in sleazy bars!
 
Stephen's 'Golden Pasha' 6 (original)

This cropped version comes from Drummer in 1976. It's interesting that that particular publication should decide to crop out the whip. It makes the Pasha seem cornered, rather than surrounded. Interesting too, that Drummer don't seem to have had the nude version at their disposal (unless, of course, they preferred the contrast and subtle power of nude vs clothed, i.e. CMNM). Either way, it's a tribute to the essence of domination in Stephen's drawing of this scene.
 
 
The Golden Pasha doesn't quite have the power of other Etienne stories. The draughtmanship is good quality, the sexuality subdued, but bubbling teasingly beneath the surface and between the frames. The Pasha's relationship with his harem/slaves seems to be strictly sadistic. It's they who seem to threaten him with sex as a punishment and humiliation. The simple morality of the story is a far cry from the aggressive sexual subjugations of Night Patrol, Marine Training and Here Comes the Groom to name just a few of Stephen's later creations. 
 
Perhaps that reflects the political changes of the 60s and the greater freedom of expression subsequently afforded to gay men.
