A-Z of Fetish Artists - Stud

Stud's art dates from around 1980, a time when fetish publishing in the UK was testing the boundaries of new-found 'liberation' from censorship. In a way, though, it seems to look back to the 50's/60's and the traditional, leather biker in this first image illustrates this. This is not the civilised, leather gentry of Tom of Finland's work but a fearsome Hell's Angel, whose unkempt hair, oversized boots and lewd clothing suggest a rough and lascivious character. In startling contrast, the victim awaiting his due seems quite normal, an average guy with an attractive face, coiffured blond hair and trim physique. Only the generously-sized nipple rings give a clue that he's a signed up member, but you sense a chasm of character and lifestyles between them (class if you like) that seems very English. The drawing of the biker is a little stiff (it's the iconography that creates his menace) but for my money the rendering of the bound captive is exceptionally good.

The second drawing of a water-sports scene has a curiously naïve feel, the tough guy arches awkwardly (almost protectively!) over his captive to make a pissy connection. It's as though space has run out at the top of the picture and he's being squeezed in. The whip and other symbols of butchness (tattoo, stubble etc) are somewhat undermined by this boyish awkwardness and also his rather cute face with it's luxuriant eyelashes. The technique is sketchy but the shading technique is actually quite sophisticated. Overall, the picture seems charmingly naïve and if you have seen Thomas Waugh's collections of early gay art you'll probably remember seeing other pictures drawn in this way.

This dungeon scene also has a retro feel, recalling times when pseudo-historical settings were regularly used to provide 'cover' for S&M imagery. The detailed texturing of the background (including disturbing streaks on the walls) greatly enhances the brooding atmosphere. Stud had a fondness for hoods on both prisoners and torturers and he's also gone to town with the chain restraints here. The unadorned prisoner, hanging around in the background, awaiting his turn, makes a nice contrast and reminds us that the leather gear is here is not mere costumery, selected by the wearer, but an intimidating part of the ritual. You have to search a bit to discover the exact nature of the ordeal Stud is portraying, the hot clue is nearly out of the picture. I can't tell if this is artistic discretion or more of the clumsy 3rd party cropping you can see at the top. This picture appears to have been shaded with washes, suggesting the original was coloured but I've yet to see a coloured Stud picture, low circulation magazines at that time were predominantly black and white.

Stud's approach to S&M is pretty uncompromising, so his version of 'riding the wedge' replaces the usual chamfered, wooden beam with a fearsome sharp blade. (click on the label below for more examples). The prisoner, sympathetically portrayed once again as an average, young man, dangles above, clinging on by his fingertips to delay the inevitable ride down the sloping blade. The whole scene is lit by an 'authentic' flaming brand. Meanwhile the torturer and inquisitors look on with emotions concealed behind ceremonial hoods which have all sorts of unpleasant, historical associations. There's a kinship here with the strange dungeon imagery of Les Farnak.

The final picture seems to me to epitomise Stud's art. At first it is mildly shocking. The activities in progress - piercing, waxing, hair burning etc - are really not so terrible as fetish goes, but Stud suggests there is far worse to come. However, it is his characterisation of the bound victim that gives the picture it's edge. With slender body and luxuriant blond hair he seems to epitomise a healthy, carefree, 'normal' youth whose presence here seems quite out of place, although he is clearly aroused by the attention. The torturers suppress his cries and go about their work (corrupting the innocent? punishing the privileged?) with grim, merciless smiles.

Stud's art seems to make a point of placing ordinary men at the mercy of dark and evil captors who revel in their power over the seemingly innocent (or uninitiated perhaps) victim. Despite the limitations of his drawing technique, it's a very powerful, angry message. I have hinted that Stud may have belonged to the 1950's generation, a seriously oppressive time for gays in the UK and these pictures, coming as they do at the dawn of modern liberation may represent something of a primal scream at the injustice of it all. These days he is something of a cult figure and we can just enjoy his pictures for their raw erotic power.

I haven't found any site for Stud, his porny name makes searching pretty hard. He may be represented at gay museum sites but I can only suggest the GMBA archive (current link in sidebar).

A-Z of Fetish Artists - Stevens (William)

Stevens - Jail Belting

In stark contrast to Steven's lollipops, the work of William Stevens shows SM scenes with powerful action and emotions. See here the concentration of the prison guard as he lashes a chained-up prisoner with his belt. Despite the static, restraint position, there's a sense of energy in the guard's exertions. Amusingly, he's standing on the prisoner's foot which shows true sadism, although this indulgence surely must impair his swing! The detailing of the face and the back of the hands, in this and the picture below, show an observant eye.

Stevens - Jail Assault

In this picture, the fear in the eyes of the prisoner is portrayed so convincingly, that I suspect it might take the subject beyond the realms of entertaining erotica for some fans. This image is beautifully composed with the guards crowding in around their naked victim, forcing him to show his backside - sensuously rounded buttocks and a tantalising glimpse of undercarriage. You can sense the guard's cigarette quivering between his lips as he savours the sight! Note the mysterious shape projecting from the his groin area and looking suspiciously like a disguised cock. A case of hidden eroticism that scarcely seems warranted, in what is already a fairly unambiguous subject. Must be British!

In fact, I don't have any information at all about this artist and would welcome any advice from my readers about him.

A-Z of Fetish Artists - Steven

Steven - Forced To Watch

Steven is a mainstream, magazine artist with a cartoony, lollipop style. His pictures depict sexy and attractive young men, but are usually devoid of fetish content. However, I thought these exceptions were worth including here. Steven's confident, well developed style creates very attractive images but I particularly like the treatment of the tied up man in this first picture. He's struggling against the restraints, but getting off on it. The dishevelled, revealing clothing is a big plus point for me. A pretty boy put in his place. I haven't researched the story this belongs to, I suspect it is less exciting than the humiliation scenario the picture suggests to me. You can probably imagine your own version.

 Steven - Bondage Play

The second image is more twinky and the fetish element is superficial, but the ropework is nicely done. The inventive use of the sweaty jockstrap waistband as an improvised gag and lasso is an earthy touch that suggests this scene is less playful than it might first appear, an ambiguity reflected in the captive's doubtful expression.

Fraternity Initiation

This frat spanking also has a strong domination-submission theme. Steven's frivolous style is not inappropriate for this scenario, but, for a non-fetish artist, he convincingly captures the abject submission of the blindfolded jocks, grovelling for the privilege of being admitted to the glamorous 'DIK' fraternity. The portrayal of the handsome, initiation committee revelling in their power and clearly contemplating further humiliations with some excitement, deftly sums up the dubious nature of this ritual behind the humorous veneer. It's interesting to compare this image with the conventional, fetish rendering of grovelling, the classic, leather, boot-licking scene (below).

Tom Of Finland - Boot Lover

Tom presents the Boot Lover as a man ecstatically worshipping superior beings - gods, who seem to be neither forcing him to do it, nor appreciating it. Pretty much like conventional religion. It's quite different to the calculating, one-off transaction of the fraternity initiation but arguably, Steven's understated, but slightly sinister scene is far more interesting.

It's easy to find Steven's work through search engines, but I haven't discovered a website for him, info from readers is welcome.

A-Z of Fetish Artists - Squire

Squire - Two men

This is a real mystery man. I have just 3 pictures by him, all very fuzzy and indistinct, but so striking that I had to include him in my survey. The first is his most well-known and features a craggy jawed, boot boy having fun with a young sportsman in basketball boots. Literally swept off his feet by a big, butch, hairy man. Well, we all dream don't we? Despite the signature, it's often attributed to Palanca, presumably because of the oversized boots. (Palanca actually does bare feet rather than boots - see my A-Z article on Palanca) This picture also seems to endorse the supposed relationship between shoe size and other body parts, I wouldn't know about that but, beyond the humour, there's some nice man drawing here, both characters are appealing and there's a satisfying balance in the composition. The big boots suggest a pendulum and a sense of rocking motion, but also provide a firm base for the image.

 Squire - Military Paddling

This image employs the same theme of size and age difference, but is less playful in mood. I find the grovelling sportsman and military bully rather unappealing here, but the detailing of the boots and uniform is marvellous. That jockstrap bulge balanced on an intimidating paddle is pretty fine too. The finish is more polished in this picture, but note the odd positioning of the sportsman's left foot and right hand.

Squire - At The Urinal

The final image is quite different in feel, somewhat reminiscent of the work of 'Big in Boots', an artist I have yet to feature in this series. The subject was dictated by a commission but Squire has certainly laid on a sleazy treatment. The maturity of the subject character forms an interesting progression from the earlier pictures.

I haven't been able to find any web address for Squire's art, he was mentioned at the Tom of Finland Foundation in 2002, but I don't know if he's still around, info from readers welcome.

A-Z of Fetish Artists - Spubba

Spubba - Fetishy Boy

I've including Spubba in this survey mainly on the strength of this one drawing. The model depicted is smoothly muscular and beautifully drawn, his beefcake pose is very conventional and the warm colour palette almost makes you want to hang it on your wall. But Spubba has dressed him in a gas mask and chastity cage, relatively unusual fetish accessories, both of which are associated with external control. It somehow creates a powerful sense of an attractive individuality and masculinity being surrendered or enslaved. Beauty in chains as it were, but chains of a particularly controlling, suffocating type.
He poses for a humiliating portrait, his masters new acquisition.

Spubba - The Experiment

My second example represents conventionality of a different sort. This open legged pose is replicated, over and over again, in countless tentacle pictures and yet it never seems to lose it's allure for artists or followers of that genre. In Spubba's version, the 'tentacles' seem to be technological in nature and draping rather than restraining the subject, whose submission seems more or less voluntary. It's nice to see a mature man (with body hair) on the receiving end for a change. The translucent, rubbery tubes are convincingly done and there's some nice, subtle colouring once again. Spubba is one of the Class Comics stable of artists and that skill level shows.

Spubba's work does not abound on the internet and much of it is pretty vanilla,

A-Z of Fetish Artists - Spryte

Spryte - Steam

If the current day tentacle phenomenon is intriguing, the spanking world's obsessive, fascination with a specific, ritualised form of male humiliation is no less fascinating. Humour is a key ingredient for the genre and Spryte is one of it's prime exponents. Thus, in 'Steam', four marines are hung up by their underpants and spanked by a primitive, steam-driven machine straight out of the Mickey Mouse, Steamboat Bill era. This is essentially four studies of chastised buttocks with sexy glimpses of tightly wrapped balls in between and the smooth shaved backsides enhance the erotic interest no end!

No reason for the punishment is supplied, but then arbitrary humiliation is part and parcel of military service. The spanking machine is a wacky device (!) that just emphasises the impersonal, unstoppable nature of the punishment. Franco is famous for his machines of course and a similar, rotating, suspension device also appears in Jonathan's memorable series, 'Tourists' aka Gallipoli.

  Spryte - Barber Shop

Spanking is regarded as a non-sexual pastime by some of it's exponents, but Spryte's victims usually present an erotic display and he is not reluctant to show spankers (or spectators) with erections. This barber shop image directly links spanking and sexual excitement, with the razor strop belt as a key ingredient. It's not clear if the the customer's long hair and beard is responsible for this assault, or the result of putting off the experience!
.
The erotic potential of the traditional barber is under-exploited in fetish art – we have haircutting and shaving, both intimate personal services with fetish connections. The imposing chair is just right for bondage and the customer's body is mysteriously cloaked in a protective sheet. In the days before sexual liberation, the customary offer of 'something for the weekend, sir?' (i.e. condoms) was an excitingly sexual question.

Spryte - Builders

This image is one of a series showing macho, hairy-arsed, construction workers being ordered around and punished by a particularly effeminate, upper crust manager who seizes on any opportunity to give them spankings – for smoking, time wasting, organising strikes etc. The oppression role-reversal message is not particularly subtle, but the humiliation of beefy builders, forced to expose their assets and endure endless rear-end pain is no less enjoyable for that.

Spryte - Juice

Spryte's output is not dedicated solely to spanking. This plant attack picture might be considered as tentacle-ania, but the tightly wrapped men's bodies, about to be engulfed (and consumed?) by the carnivorous plant is closer to high bondage art, dressed up in an exotic form. The groping and probing of the 'tentacles' here is just a means of luring the victims to their fate, whereas in most tentacle pictures, the groping and probing is their fate. The background figure disappearing into the flower head is a particularly sexy idea and the device of having two buddies suffering together adds an extra erotic twist. It also allows him to elaborate on the plant's modus operandi.

Despite the comic format, this picture is not really funny at all and has subtle depths. Most viewers will instinctively recognise and enjoy the Freudian psychology at work – man transformed into a penis and drawn into the womb, or if you prefer, man rendered helpless by his sexual excitement and hence vulnerable to being consumed by the object of his desire. What a way to go!

Spryte - Prison Scene

This prison scenario has no spanking ingredients either, but there's another striking power reversal as white prison officers perform on each other for the pleasure of a black inmate. The prisoner's characterisation is a cut above Spryte's normal cartooning and very attractive – he's streetwise, confident, muscular and well-endowed. In contrast to his power, the captive officers, deprived of their uniforms, have a hairless, fleshy, soft-skinned quality that is curiously submissive and erotic.

Spryte - Boxer

Many of Spryte's pictures show animals and mythical creatures turning on their human tormentors and returning their abuse in like form (e.g. by branding them or springing mousetraps on tender regions). More role reversal. Sometimes, however, the motivation is pure devilment, as in this image of an entangled boxer, biting his lip in pain, as a small, malevolent spirit uses his dangling tackle for a miniature punch bag. In some pictures the devil is identified as Spryte's alter ego, enjoying similar sadistic pleasures at the expense of strapping lads.

Spryte's light hearted cartoons are justifiably popular and he shows great imagination and originality of thought in his wide ranging exploration of male humilation and revenge scenarios. Despite the simplicity of style, his depictions of muscular victims, clad only in skimpy/ripped clothing often have a genuinely sensual quality. His depictions of the most attractive and powerful of male stereotypes, inexplicably controlled and suffering at the hands of the most unlikely of tormentors, taps into deeply erotic and emotional feelings and gives hope to us all!

Thanks to SoupGoblin who has kindly provided me with some links for Spryte - see the first comment below. There's a decent collection at Jock Spank (link in sidebar), Google will throw up lots of examples too.

Riding the Wedge by Spi-n-t

An appendix to my A-Z article on  Spi-n-t, this page from his epic comic 'Yosauro' shows a device more like the gym horse which started this series than the sharp wedge alternative we have seen lately. There's a nice lock-in moment in the first frame.

This variant has insect-like or perhaps reptillian form (from Yo-sauro?). Also the capability to grow a rather substantial horn mid-ride to entertain the trapped rider. Unfortunately the supervisors are distracted by the arrival of royalty just as the fun starts.

A-Z of Fetish Artists - Spi-n-t

Spi-n-t ~ Axeman (from Yosauru)
Spi-n-t (Spinete) is a serious commercial artist who makes forays into comic erotica notably in 'Yosauro' (1995) where my first image comes from. The massive cock-on-the-block rivals the exuberance of Tom of Finland, but of course this picture wouldn't work if it were a normal size. The gothic executioner has an over-the-top tool of his own and the straining face of the prisoner, trying to escape his fate, is delicious. You can see the outcome of this scene at the artist's blog (link below). Spi-n-t's style is marked by well developed, sometimes exaggerated, sensuously curving muscularity which glistens lusciously. The hooded executioner is a clue to another of Spi-n-t's interests, exotic fetish clothing - bodysuits, hoods, fishnets - you get the picture.

Spi-n-t ~ Es Miooo!!
'Es mio' (it's mine) is an example of the comic extremes of Spi-n-t's style, lampooning the leather scene. The picture features some of his imaginative costuming and fetish appliances. It's not entirely devoid of serious, erotic content, if you reflect on the underlying scenario of a master asserting his ownership of a slave. It's a theme I can't recall having seen done by any other artist. At the same time, there's something sinister and unpleasant about the squabbling tops and the indignation of the violated slave. Take a moment to appreciate the quality of design and graphics in this little piece.

Spi-n-t ~ Fiesta Nocturna
In this picture of a fetish bar comic characters appear again, canoodling at the bar in all their finery. They are contrasted with much more 'real' beefcake characters lurking on the right, whose sex appeal is expressed in more conventional, but extraordinarily potent terms. It's a more glamorous style that looks good in conventional male oriented advertising. This picture captures the atmosphere of a busy bar very well, with just a few, well observed cameos, there's actually another adjoining segment to it which you can see at the blog.

 Spi-n-t ~ Don't Stop
'Don't Stop' is a memorable depiction of domination and erotic passion. The pose of the 'top' captures real masculinity and there are some nice details - the intense facial expressions, the tightly held collar leash and the incongruous black sneakers. This is a nicely structured composition putting together angles and curves, a bit like the illuminated letters of a mediaeval manuscript. The oversized organs work well, not just as expressions of sexual ecstasy, but visually, their curves and flying juices acting like baroque embellishments to the pleasing body shapes.

Spi-n-t
This final picture depicts a muscular, young captive suffering in the aftermath of a lashing. His mighty body is tightly bound and he has been pierced and tethered, subjugating and humiliating him. His handsome, grimacing face is amazingly expressive of pain and the struggle to endure it manfully. With no gloating captor to distract us, we are drawn in to the intimacy of his suffering, it's powerful, erotic and quite disturbing.

A-Z of Fetish Artists - Spartacus

Spartacus - Ball Game

Spartacus was a prominent artist of the 60's known for depicting young men at play. It's mostly decent stuff on the surface, but with suggestive overtones and details for the intended gay audience. Tight shorts and bare bottoms feature prominently and some of his bulging jocks have pretty unambiguous shapes.

In 'Ball Game' there's more than a suggestion of illicit groping, centre stage, and those tight shorts and hairy thighs look just as good today as they must have done 50 years ago! I imagine the accompanying copy would have included arch references to 'tackle' and 'diving'. If you think this is not a fetish picture check out juxtaposition of pointed studs(!) and buttocks, bottom right.

That glimpse of elbow between the upturned legs suggests more interference going on and the three guys at the back look as if they are up to no good too. The tackler's outstretched hand grasping suggestively between the background figure's thighs is a more subtle, conventional 'hidden eroticism' but Spartacus is definitely pushing the envelope here.
(Click on the label below for other examples of hidden eroticism).

Spartacus - On A Training Ship
My second picture, showing a 'crossing the line' ceremony, gives a glimpse of what might have been (and possibly was in the artists unpublished work). A series of young men are tied up and blindfolded before having their heads dunked in a bath full of crabs and eels, which has been placed at the feet of 'King Neptune' so that he might enjoy their humiliation.

The bulk of the picture is taken up with conventional 'boy physique' imagery, somewhat in the style of Scott-Tuke, which gives the piece an air of youthful innocence and adventure. This probably made it more acceptable naughtiness in it's time, but paradoxically the reverse applies today. The clothing details are revealing, ripped shorts and some fairly racy open flies and scanty thongs – not to mention another pair of 'in yer face' hairy thighs – reassuringly adult.

Spartacus' boys often have an Oriental or Polynesian appearance, it's a useful identifier for his work.

Spartacus - Shower series
The final image comes from a more explicit era and the artist is clearly revelling in his freedom with a mega-oversized organ. I don't know quite why the young coach is being restrained while being simultaneously pampered, but there's a companion piece in which he spanks the lads and you can see visual evidence that this picture follows it in the sequence. Perhaps he's being tricked and prepared for revenge.

The atomiser is delightfully camp but quite suggestive if you think about it, likewise the talcum powder, which would need amazing properties to reach it's intended destination. I love the detail of the boy's hand gently tapping the canister to promote pouring. This imagery recalls an advertisement of the era in which salt is sprinkled on a chicken's tail as a prank.

The quality of this last drawing contrasts markedly with the earlier pictures, although those images have probably suffered from the limitations of '60's magazine printing (and later scanning) and were surely much better 'in the flesh'. This later style suggests to me an acquaintance with Harry Bush's work (or vice versa!). Oh, what treasures have we lost?

I haven't found a decent site for Spartacus' work but it turns up at art groups and vintage photo sites, there's a selection at this gallery which includes most of the images I know of. Information about other work is welcome.

A-Z of Fetish Artists - Soto

Soto - The River Ordeal
Soto usually depicts fantasy beasts being beastly to each other, as in the HellBoy stories, which is not my normal stamping ground for this series. He also uses computer assistance in finishing his work but I'm giving him a mention for his human drawings. This sketch of a man who has just been spanked with an oar over a upturned boat certainly qualifies as fetish art. I love the designer G-string dangling from the oar as supplementary evidence of his humiliation.

Soto - Casualty
Underwear removal is the focus of 'Casualty' too where a burly soldier is being rip-stripped and felt out by an inquisitive and seductive tentacle organism. The spent cartridges on the floor suggest our man is out of ammo and instead of going down fighting, he is taking the line of least resistance, preparing for the inevitable 'ending' with as much courage and dignity as he can muster. He has helpfully assumed the bog standard, open legged, sitting stance which seems mandatory for tentacle rummaging.
As tentacle images go, this is beautifully understated and manages to suggest that such creatures have more discerning sensibilities than one would have guessed from the countless images of aggressive orifice filling, supplied by other artists. The warrior's face turned aside in passive revulsion is fabulous. I suppose the mothers of soldiers, like all mothers, advise them to change into clean underwear before battle (in case of accidents) but this chunky warrior's panties are surprisingly flimsy and provocative, scarcely concealing his own little 'tentackle', it's a nice touch of human weakness. Soto's fully coloured images are beautifully crafted and textured. The murky lighting and indistinct detail is not unusual in his work, it's highly atmospheric, but frustrating at times.

Soto - Just A Raped Guy 5
The final image is a group of sketches that explores the multifunctional abilities of tentacles to coil, restrain, pull, squeeze, caress and probe the human body. They work well as a group and the simplicity of the individual sketches is more effective than a single complex drawing which tries to show dozens of tentacles with everything happening at once. His tentacle imagining is quite interesting but there's also some nice body sketching here, I particularly like the man's stubble detail (bottom right)

A-Z of Fetish Artists - Ira C Smith

Ira C Smith - Bondage Pair

Ira Smith's work is based on classic figure drawing of the highest order, combined with a keen sense of style which gives his work 'hang it on the wall', artistic credentials. This is not to say he holds back on erotic content though and in 'bondage pair' two athletes are secured in a humiliating, kneeling position, displaying their naked asses provocatively through the bands of their jockstraps. There is something very sexy about buddies being captive together, the identical poses and clothing in Ira's picture play on that theme, although the details of their bondage differ for some reason. One can imagine these lads looking on helplessly as their team-mates are taken, one at a time, then stripped and bound to join them.

  Ira C Smith - Ringz

Ringz is an arty treatment of a classic punishment pose, the imaginative floating rings help to create a dynamic impression of struggle and comprehensive restraint. By omitting the engineering details, Ira is free to home in on the taut, arched body. He uses dark shading to emphasis the highlights and valleys of muscle definition in almost photographic detail. This technique runs the risk of 'breaking up' the subject's body and losing the sense of bulk, but the white background mitigates this effect. The rope looped round the waist and the blindfold give the image an extra, little erotic kick. Notice the halo-like effect of the central ring, the captive's head seems to be pushing through it, noose-like. The subtle symphony of winding curves, continues bottom right, in a pattern that seems to capture the snake-like sensuality of bondage rope, while simultaneously suggesting celebratory garlands. This decorative quality suggests the captor has complex motivations!

  Ira C Smith - Connected

'Connected' cleverly weaves bondage ropes around two men (refreshingly mature), who are locked in an embrace which might be wrestling or love making. The discreet, downward pointing hand on the stomach gives a clue to deeper intimacy. With it's tasteful nudity and geometric balance, the composition is artistically pleasing but also unexpectedly sexy. The ropes seem to be simultaneously pulling the men together and apart and controlled by hands unseen, which gives the piece a manipulative overtone and imparts to us a tingling, voyeuristic quality. Connoisseurs of 'hidden eroticism' (see label below for more) can visualise what may ultimately be revealed by the two lower ropes, drawing aside the mens' legs, like the opulent curtains of a theatre.

Ira C Smith - Tied and Abused

Despite a similar, arty style, the content of 'Tied and Abused' does not hold back at all from fetish expression. It is evident that the kneeling captive has been spanked and some lash or other implement has drawn blood. A brutal foot urges him in the direction of an ominous square frame. The rope-work looping round the captive's body is particularly prominent and sharply defined. It continues, winding round the frame in similar manner to Ringz above. In a curious trick of the eye his collar is actually already attached to it. In this picture the darkly shaded torso is contrasted with starkly white or line-art only areas, such as the hair and clothing, it's a favourite technique of this artist. The artist Cavelo uses it too, in order to differentiate characters in his drawings and if you consult my A-Z article on Cavelo you will see the similarities do not end there.

The quality of Ira Smith's art speaks for itself but it rewards fetish enthusiasts who linger longer. You can see more of his work and buy it at the Ira C Smith website.

A-Z of Fetish Artists - Skipper

Skipper - Don't Move

Skipper's art takes in some fairly grim subjects, such as shootings and impalements, so it doesn't get much of an airing outside specialist BDSM forums. In 'Don't Move' (above) the violence is implied rather than explicit. Skipper's originals are often large scale works, so some details, like the gag-grenade, don't make it to reduced images. When you've worked it all out, there's a degree of ambiguity as to whether this fantastical scene is a sadistic execution, an elaborate, tongue-loosening (!) procedure, a suicide pact or simply a bizarre test of manhood and bravado. It could be all four. The participants are uncompromisingly square jawed, rugged men, but their sexual communion is fueled by mutual fear and uncertainty, so there's a subtle but deep intimacy here which is not obvious at first sight. The kneeling soldier's abstracted, ecstatic expression as he savours his power is almost as scary as the hardware! Skipper's use of delicate water colouring for such an uncompromising subject seems a little incongruous, stylistically the end result reminds me of some of the work of Manflesh.

Skipper often chooses military subjects showing explicit maltreatment of protesting captives and there's a disturbing degree of historical authenticity in the atrocities he adapts to his erotic purpose, such as GI's impaled with bamboo stakes. Despite their suffering, the victims always respond erotically. At it's extreme, bloody combat and sexual congress become intimately entwined in a glorious, over the top, death-rape climax. These images are too extreme for this blog but 'Construction' (reproduced in black and white for a book cover, below) gives a sense of just how challenging Skipper's work can be.

 Skipper - Construction
A highly masculine, construction worker patiently applies a succession of nail piercings to his own body. I suppose this would be dubbed as 'self-harm' by those who like to police human behaviour, but that is hardly an adequate description of what's going on here. In fashion piercing (and tattooing) the pain is usually perceived as a short-term price to pay for a body-flattering decoration. Through Skipper's eyes it is seen as a private pleasure in it's own right, a painful, but erotically satisfying, test of inner strength. The sheer quantity of iron-mongery and the calm concentration of the Construction worker as he proceeds with his task gives the image a striking, obsessive, intensity while the upraised, gleaming nail-point adds an element of almost magical ritual. It's a thoughtful reflection on a little understood, but probably widespread, fetish.

Skipper - Sanctuary
'Sanctuary' is quite different, a complex tableau depicting a failed police raid on club where a fisting orgy is progress. This is a big work and the photography probably doesn't do it justice. The entwined figures take a bit of untangling but there's some nice visual elements here for those into well developed muscularity and bull necks. The subjugation of the cop provides a domination side-show to spur the participants on. Deep fisting is also shown in other Skipper works. It's not supposed to be life threatening but there can hardly be a more demanding or invasive form of intimacy so it's easy to see how it sits alongside other activities portrayed by Skipper

Skipper - Wash
I'm not sure I know what exactly is going on in 'Wash', but the distended stomach suggests something pretty taxing for the butch captive. I've included it mainly because it's a wild sketch, full of wet, sleazy vitality. There's an intensity in much of Skippers' work suggesting a strong engagement with his subject matter. It's a quality which expresses itself in a different ways in 'Construction' and in the excesses of his military tortures and orgies but Skipper always seems to have something to say about his erotic feelings as well as simply invoking ours.

I've not been able to find a website hosting Skipper's art, but there should be some oddments in the GMBA archive (current link in sidebar).

A-Z of Fetish Artists - Sirio

 Sirio - Tentacles
There are mountains of tentacle art on the internet and much of it is repetitive and not terribly exciting, but I do like this picture by Sirio. The contorted body position and flesh indentations made by the tentacles do actually create the impression of a body under stress, in the grip of a powerful …...well, whatever.
This image is simply drawn, but you can see there's a nice erotic sensuality in the style.
The elfin ears tell you Sirio is depicting some sort of Fantasyland here.

 Sirio - Captive
There are similar, other-worldly indicators in this picture too. I could wish for more butch-looking faces, but this simple depiction of domination and forced submission is surprisingly powerful.
The collar imagery and tight arm restraint is great.
In the absence of an explanatory storyline, the evidence of bruising, physical abuse gives the image an evil tweak which some will like and others not. Violence and tenderness make unpleasant bedfellows in real life and in fantasy pose difficult questions about the acceptable boundaries of S&M.

 Sirio - Batman and Bane
Much of Sirio's output concerns the subjugation and humiliation of garishly-clad, super-heroes at the hands of equally improbable villains. It's enjoyable enough as adventure entertainment but personally I don't 'get' the cross-over of comic super-powers into erotica. The sexy outfits and muscular bodies are a tease but that's usually as far as it goes for me. However, this image of Batman being subjected to a painful back breaker (part of a series at Sirio's blog) is a pretty sexy concept, it's a shame his sexy underwear isn't seen more often.

Sirio - Centuria
This depiction of man on man sex seems to ooze testosterone, with it's muscular bodies and massive thighs but the face of the top has a fragile, androgynous quality about it, suggesting a quite confusing role reversal. There's a similar effect in the tentacle picture. I like the economical fetish detail, the bound wrists and squeezed pecs neatly sum up the captive's helplessness.

Sirio's art contains many ingredients which are far removed from my own interests – the Yaoi style, the fantasy characters and the biff-bash fighting. I limit my commentary accordingly - but there's some striking imagery to be found.

A-Z of Fetish Artists - Silencio

Silencio probably doesn't count as a fetish artist, but I like his stylish work so much that I've dug out some fetishy stuff as an excuse to include him here.

 Silencio - Chuck S
His art features fantasy subjects in which aliens and monsters threaten and molest clean-cut heroes. The undead have never struck me as erotically desirable, but knowing the catholic tastes of fetish fans I would hesitate to generalise about that! Silencio's undead appear to have the wholly laudable aim of ripping the clothes off their handsome enemy, although they must know it can only end in a retaliatory poke with a knobbly dildo (double ended!). The gritty, square jawed look of the hero is much in vogue right now and I must admit I love it too. He even manages to make heart-motif boxers look sexy.

Silencio - HollyKnight
'HollyKnight' features a similar character in fantasy hero garb. His casual look to one side suggests confidence and superiority but the flimsy loin cloth, barely noticeable at first, does a great job of bringing out his underlying masculinity and human weakness.
Strong jaw-lines like this once epitomised the All-American look of the mid-20th century, as per pin-ups like Tab Hunter and Ty Hardin and the original Superman comics. So it's a bit unexpected to see a French artist embracing it so enthusiastically. Tom of Finland was also famously fascinated by prominent jaws, but his versions sometimes over-exaggerate the horizontal line at the expense of depth, which tips them over into disappointing caricature sometimes. Silencio's men have deep, very square jaws which, if idealised, do seem more believable.
(Of course, we must not forget Palanca's contribution to jaw-dom.)

Silencio - Frame from Dokkun Comic
This is a great captivity comic-style sketch, it's a shame it's not fully worked out in colour. The elfin-eared villain doesn't work for me but the soaring arch effect creates a terrific sense of our hero's helplessness and exposure, like he's been put on display as a museum piece.

Silencio - Beautiful Dead
The same sense of isolation and imminent danger is also brought out in 'Beautiful Dead' where two men seem to be taking a last chance of some sex before succumbing to the horde of undead. Many gay men seem to embrace a similar outlook. The left hand character, with his geeky glasses and muscular physique, frantically stripping off his clothes, is a true heir to Clark Kent. Silencio brings out a fleshy youthfulness in him which I just love. (I have posted another example like this by him at my No2 blog here). There's a marvellous sense of manly protectiveness towards his smaller companion, whose own vest ripping routine seems like an ambitious attempt to conjure up the Incredible Hulk.

Just great gay art.
